 Harry's Big Adventure
« Thread Started on Apr 20, 2009, 4:48pm »

Hi All

Here is the story of Harry Budgie. Harry is a beautiful boy, but he is BIG.

On Saturday I noticed he was having trouble cleaning his rear end so I caught him and washed him clean. As a reward for being good, and given that I was pretty sure he wasn't going to fly far, I let go of him so he could explore the living room.

Our front room isn't really bird friendly as there are ornaments on top of cabinets and the furnature is quite large and I worried they might get stuck behind it, which is why they have such a big cage. But I was worried that Harry was getting less mobile than before and wanted to try and give him some exercise.

Well he flew like a house brick! 6" off the ground for about 3 feet, landed and puffed. After he'd a rest and a potter around I went over to him andhe stepped up and went back into the cage.

Result [image] Go Harry [image] looks like this will become a regular thing to help keep his weight down ;D

Hugs

Billie

19th April 2009 Day 2 of Harry's Big Adventure

Today Harry was more adventurous and after his 'fly's like brick' impression to the dinning room post rest he had a wonder/waddle round. It was sooo funny, bless him he walks/runs like a penguin so Harry at speed is hilarious (sorry Harry).

He came back to the living room after a while and I put my hand out and he stepped up, and went back into the cage for a rest.

This is Harry fluffed up!

He was soo good, I think this will become a regular thing [image]

20th April 2009 Day 3 of Harry's Big Adventure

Well here we are on day three, Harry was reluctant to come out today so I had to grab him. I sat on the sofa and opened my hands and he sat happily on my hand for a while.

Deciding he was bored with me, he flew off to the dinning room again. Puffing well he then sat there looking very pleased with himself. I put a tray of seed down, just to encourage him back and called to him, love him he came running over. He only had a couple of bites then had a waddle round.

He looked a bit lost so I called him and he ran over to me and stood there looking at me. I put my hand down to him and he hopped up. We sat on the sofa and he kept looking at the cage, so I opened the door and he flew in.

Love him he's so cute. It will be great if we can hang out like this :)

Hugs

Billie :)

LOL he's handsome!
When I had the aviary I bought one of those wheel things for the birds - some slept in it but some would run like crazy.
Cutest thing in the world is a budgie running on a wheel - waddle butt! [image]

Harrys Adventures Day four

Well yesterday I let Tiny out for a walk around and apart from needing to be grabbed coz he wouldn't go back in it was fine.

Harry was still reluctant to come out but after being picked up he sat on my hand then flew...straight at the wall AGAIN!!! what a plum, either his stering is off or his breaks are shot [image] he was fine it was more of a blunder than a splat kind of thing.

I brought Tiny out with Harry today, after a trundle round on the roof of the cage Tiny flew off to the dining room, missing the wall Harry can't! [image] They sat on the carpet togther looking hilarious [image] I took some pics today and will post them when I get them on the machine. Bloth blundered into the blinds even though they were closed.

Harry came back to the cage on my finger I put my hand over his shoulders not touching him but he stayed put. I rescued Tiny from behind the blind, and he flew off to land on the side of the wall clock! He stepped on to my finger and I put my hand round his shoulders too, looks like a good way of not grabbing them but not giving them room to open their wings to fly off.

This is going well [image] [image] Next step is to introduce them to the video camera [image] [image]

Hugs

I had this same fiasco with bobby when she was over weight, she still cant fly very well but she is getting there. It is so funny watching them waddle, bobby waddled at speed at my sister and she ran away because she doesn't like birds much. funniest thing ive seen so far.

Way to go Harry for working out! So what if ya hit a few walls along the way... keep it up! ;)

Billie, I use the "hand over shoulders" thing too... it comes in handy when you've got a conure who just can't wait to go "exploring". ::)

Day Five!

Hary missed the wall [image] Still had to grab him to get him to come out of the cage and he's getting a bit wary of my hand now [image] (till he wants to go home) today I put him on top of the cage, so he had somewhere to perch that was high and not on the floor.

Tiny didn't come out (having got a bit frightend by the blinds yesterday I let him stay quiet today). Tiny has become Harry's personal trainer and climbed up inside the cage and kept biting Harrys feet, which made Harry run about on the roof [image]

Harry flew off the roof of the cage and missed the wall to safely land in the dining room. After a potter round he flew! back to the living room and landed on the seat of the sofa [image] [image] [image] I was just telling him how clever he was....as he climbed up the arm of the sofa to get nearer the cage. When he hurled himeslf at the cage, tried to climb up but having landed on the perspex part at the base of the bars it was a scrable followed by a splat as he fell off [image] what is he like!!!!

I took pity on him and tried to take him to the cage but he made another escape, he stepped up nicely then jumped on the cage instead! I opened the door and he looked at me, so I offered him my hand and this time he went in nicely. I should have helped him back in when he landed on the sofa as he looked from me to the cage and back again, so was asking really. [image]

He feathers have started to look more glossy so its obviously doing him some good. Gotta love a budgie waddling at speed [image] [image] Its great to let him have more freedom though. The pieds don't want to know they run away if I offer them to step up after the other two have been out. [image]

Hugs

Day 6, 25 April 2009

Hello Everyone

Well, Tiny is now Harry's official fitness trainer!

I brought Harry out and put him on the roof of the cage, where he lay! and slept! Even Tiny on the inside pecking his feet didn't shift him. Since they were all dozing I left them to it for about ten minutes then when the others woke up I brough Tiny out. No grabbing for Tiny he was reluctant but pleased in the end to be out. He followed and chased Harry round the top of the cage till Harry gave up and flew into the dining room. BAD landing and he ended up UNDER???? a table ???

Tiny also took flight did a circuit of the room and missed the top of the cage and skidded off the back of the cage ::) DOH, I found him, helped him up to a safer spot and rescued HArry.

You guys said if he won't fly move your hand up and down, this will make him flap which is better than no exercise. I tried it and it worked he got >:( and flew off ;D 8-) He came running back and stepped up to come back to the cage but decided to fly again and crashed into the window. Tiny did the same and ended up behind the blind ::) PLANK!!!

I held the strips asside and Tiny jumped over the edging and flew onto the cage, looking a bit bewildered. So I got him to step up and took him back to the cage. Harry flew into the blinds a few more times so I brought him back too. He is definately getting more flighty ;D so at least he's getting the hang of flying.

Give them a few days rest after their crashes, but they seem to be ok and enjoying their freedom once they are out.

Hugs

Billie :)
