This is a nasty DNA based virus that is potentially fatal to budgies, although it can infect other birds. Here's a good page I found that gives all the details, if you don't know them: www.blackstone-aviaries.com/polyom.htmlI'm suspecting that I have it in my aviary, (mostly because of all the weird deaths and breeding issues my budgies have had) and if I do, then judging from what I've read, my birds and I are now carriers of this virus. The main questions are "Is it polyoma?" and "What do I do now?" I've got the textbook answers for these questions, but I'd really appreciate the input of anyone who has dealt with this before. Have any of you had to deal with polyoma virus before? What kind of tests did you use, if any? What methods did you use to deal with it?

I am really sorry to hear about what you are dealing with.. I haven't had the problem but maybe take a few birds to your avain vet and let him/her do some test for you so you are sure.
I wouldn't breed any of my birds if I had it for at least 2 years..
Disinfect everything as well take your birds out and disinfect their cage. Thats a start. You will have to scrub all nest boxes as well when theyhave finished with them. I put straight white king ( bleech) in the nesting boxes out in the sun. The sun drys them, and then I sand them down..

I haven't dealt with this disease before *touch wood* so can't comment other than to say I sure hope it's not infecting your birds! Shell has had PBFD in her aviaries, maybe if she reads this thread she can share her knowledge - or PM her.

The breeding thing is kind of weird... they don't know for sure how long it takes for breeders to stop shedding the disease! Viruses are awful! I already scrub and disinfect the nestboxes, but with the old, wooden, dirt floor outdoor aviary I have, disinfecting is a near impossibility. That is the main reason I really want to rebuild, so that I can keep things cleaner and more organized. (Lack of time and money are a big object, though ) Thanks for the advice guys. I really hope it isn't polyoma, but I'll do whatever is nescessary if it is.
