He must have known what the weather was like. Yesterday was a bit warmer, and he went and had a bath, got soaked, so we could not go out. Today there was a nippy wind, even though a bit sunny , so it was a quick training session. I felt so sorry for him, he was all fluffed up, bad mummy but he flew! not far, but a couple of times. Its scarey ..he landed on top of the avairy..anyway guess who came over to say hello How come your out there, and im shut in here! Hes as good as gold getting the harness on and off his head now, and although i hold him when i put it on, he accepts it. I never give him the time to really cotton on its what im going to do, so he does not get into his head he can get away or make a fuss. Still No nips, no screeching.far more accepting, just wriggling a bit when im getting his wings through.. I think hes still learning to understand he can move around in it. I would have liked to stay out longer today, as he found his wings.

Is that the kakariki's permanent aviary in the photo? Only wondered as I see it's not double wired At risk of being told to mind my own business I would definately wire the outside as well!!! sparrowhawks will take the legs off a kakie no problem! also cats are a danger running up the wire - I wouldn't have a single wired aviary for the birds' sake

yes i have 8 birds in there Mue, and i never thought about double wireing untill the other day when the topic came up on another forum. We hardy get birds of prey around, or many cats, but thats never to say of course it would not happen, i have woods all around nearby, so its very possible it could, especially spring when they are hunting more for thier own chicks.I think my dogs keep most cats out of our garden as they are well aware of them. I have to get some more wire, as three sides need doing. It needs repositioning really so they can catch more sun, where to i dont know, its not a big garden. I also want to change the roof for a clear plastic one.

Where we live it gets quite cold so I can't leave them outside all year. In the last week it has been -5F (low) we had a heat wave and it got up to 39F. I never thought about double wire. Thanks for the tip! Lia

Glad to be of help - we feel EVERYTHING build outside must be double wired. I have watched a cat climb a single wired aviary (not ours thankfully!) and grab a cockatiel with it's claws!! Scully - don't put a clear perspex or corrugated roof on your aviary. Far better covered with wired wood or something similar. Sun through clear roofs can kill. By the way we bred kakies for may years and we had one pair that had eleven eggs, hatched them all and reared them = bless them! lovely little birds.

We haven't started building it yet. There is abut 10 inches of snow on the ground. We are still in the designing stage. I have been looking at pictures of outside aviaries and reading all I can.

hmm not good weather then! i guess you will have to think of heating with that sort of weather where you are. We dont have much snow over here, if it gets really cold, i have my birds in my living room over night. 10inches of snow over here, well i expect the world would stop (mind you i do have a sledge) I shall hopefully get hammer and nails out this weekend Mue, that particular Kak has no back toes, so he cant afford to loose any more. I do have a complete roof at the moment, but i see your point. Biggles has new words ...''No don't'' haha!

I can't even imagine heating an aviary with the temperatures we have during the winter. It is going to be their summer home.

my poor little fella...well he gets into things he shouldnt, and it just says how much i can say that for him to pick it up, Funny thing is Graham Green has picked it up too, he picks up things so quickly, and Kaeci is teaching him to whistle bad mummy Biggles has got a new swing, which he likes much better than his old one...i hope he forgives me lol! I love this little guy, because hes naughty( well just being a bird/conure really) he knows when hes doing wrong these days, and gives me that look before he tries it on again. Its a real learning experience having a bird like him, they are such bright little things.

Biggs had his little time out in his harness today, and he flew abit more, flew to me instead of anywhere. I wondered if he was getting excited when i walked out the kitchen door with him today. He was shouting his name full blast Wonder what the local wild birds thought of that noise. i started a bit of clicker training without a clicker (alot easier if you can do a click click noise) so hes been getting some extra sunflower seeds all week, anyway i hought it may encourage him to fly to me outdoors, which it is too. its supposed to be windy tommorow, so i could be flying a conure kite
