Hey guys,
Some of you may have seen the pics of the two little'uns that came out last month. Their mum has now gone down to lay again and has 4eggs but seems to be terribly unsettled on the eggs to the point where she's not even sleeping in the nestbox.
I've noticed that she's been going for the little green hen fledgling so I've removed her today and placed her with my Rosa Bourke in the hopes that this settles Hannibal down.
I didn't have a chance to clean the nestbox as she started laying again, she's a dry feeder, but I was thinking perhaps mites? If so....can I spray antimite with eggs in there?
Any thoughts would be greatly welcomed.

Not sure on this one? but i think not ,for part of an egg can absorb mostiure so spray would not be good. My suggestion since she isn't sleeping in the box, is the eggs would not be good(fertile) now.So l would take the box out and clean it with mite.Make sure its dry before yoU put it back in as well .

I agree with Pied. Take the box out & discard the eggs. Sterilise the box & let dry. Also treat all your birds with mites coz if mum has them then the babies would too.

Cool, thanks! Since taking her green hen away she has settled so tomorrow I will candle the eggs. I don't want to chuck them out if they are fertile and it may have been the youngster the whole time.
However - if they are clear I'll do exactly what you said! I don't think they have mites...BUT I don't want to take any chances if this what's putting the hen off!

Yay! They're fertile. She now has 5 and has settled...I think it was her chick who was upsetting her....no idea why as the other one she didn't care less about!

Well this is testament to NEVER removing eggs....15 days after she laid her first egg (and I was soo sure that'd be dead for sure) it has hatched! I'm gobsmacked! I know she spent at least 2 full nights off of the nest and was in and out like a yoyo but its hatched! I'm very eager now to see if the other 4 hatch, fingers crossed!!

Wow! I guess she was a better mom then she let on. Good luck with the rest of the clutch!

That is great news! Obviously her popping in & out was enough to help the chick stay alive and grow. Congratulations! New bubs on the way!
