I know that I have a fair amount of birdies in my house now, 3 have all come in fairly recently and I would have been incredibly lucky not to have any probs with them getting on and actually I didn't think I would have any at first. Now though Ollie has turned into a real nasty little bully, even though Baby Fluff is in his own cage, they have loads of flying time together and Ollie spends most of this time pestering him! He bites his feet, pulls his tail and follows him around doing this. Poor little Baby Fluff just opens his beak at Ollie and then flies off. If Puku is on the same perch Ollie leaves him alone!
Is there anything I can do to help them get on a bit better, or do I just have to leave them to it and hope they sort it out?
I know its tough on him to have so many new birds in his house recently and I am sure it doesn't help that Puku so obviously loves BF more than Ollie, but I would love it if they could all get on well.
Only thing I can suggest is to clip the wings of the bully. I had the same problem with Princess not so long ago - she attacked Woosie a couple of times so badly that she bled. She was also biting us people. I am very against clipping wings, but, I had no choice.
She is still 'top bird' and has minor goes at the others (a Princess has to keep her people in line), but is a much nicer bird now.
I am very against clipping wings myself. Is there no chance he might stop of his own accord after while, or maybe I could put him back in his cage every time he does it (like when they bite people) and so they learn not to do it? He has always seemed so submissive to Puku, I guess its different because shes a girl, but still, I have found it so surprising that he is being like this, partly the reason that I affectionately call him Chicken is that he is such a baby and seems like such a scaredy pants!!
I though Princess would get over her behaviour too - I really struggled with clipping her wings. She can still fly - no way did I want to restrict her totally. Problem was, she went from attacking the other birds to attacking us people.
If you pop Chicken back in the cage every time - well, they learn that when they want to go back in they need to attack someone, so, you are just reinforcing the issue. Wait for some other advice, I am knew to kaks, so who knows?
It might stop on its own. It does not surprise me he goes away, Baby Fluff and Dawnie had the same sweet nature. Dont worry he may not put up with it for long, and give Ollie some of his own medicine. As long as its not a real nasty fight, it may send the right message. They do seem to go after the feet, even Harvey will do that, must be a bird thing. Harvey is the cocky one in the cage, and spends his life annoying the others, yet at the same time he will show affection to everyone too. I am not worried about it as its just petty squabbling, nothing more. No other bird would be happy in with Sugar and Spice, they really do not let up, either of them. Lennie gets chased if they are out togther, which i try to avoid.
Thanks Scully that has made me feel much better about the whole thing! The sad thing is that now Puku hates being away from BF, so if I can't eventually house them all together Ollie is going to have to be on his own : ( Hahaha... Mr O actually really loves the tiels!! hehehehe!! I have some piccies that I took today of Fred sitting on his head and George trying to get in on the playstation controller while Mr O is playing PS2, I will have to post them later. They aren't too noisy at all really but I am sure that'll change as they get older, they're still only 11wks old. They are sooo much more active than Bertie was, although I know they are younger and more confident but still..... They stay up really late just taking short sleeps at intervals and always ready to play!
Will do Judy Thanks : ) I thought it might be something like that Karen, I just hope that he settles down and leaves poor little fluff alone! It's funny really that he should be the dominant one... I know hw is slightly older and he has been here longer but Ollie is much smaller than Fluff and Puku loves Fluff more!!
haha!! well, we'll have to see how it goes but I don't think Mr O would let me! He never wanted more than 2 birds and I have 5 so far!! I think he would seriously put his foot down at the suggestion of number 6!!
