Hi everyone! im kinda new here im getting my first kak in two weeks when he is weaned. I have read through the four forums but id really love to see some pictures of cage set-ups so i can get the idea of what his should look like and be size wise. Can he be housed with another h/r tiel if i slowly introduce them or is it better separate? Any tips on toys? food? Thankyou everyone i hope someone can help me!
they will eat the same as your Tiel. They love hidey holes, so even a small box in the cage with holes, they will like to play in. Tubes, and a scratch box, just a plastic tray with decent hay/or herbs then chuck some seeds , peanuts dried fruit in . I wouldnt put your birds in together, not yet , as the baby Kak will just get over powered by the Tiel. Side by side in cages , and just see how they get along when they are out together , supervised. I had a Kak and a budgie caged together, it was fine for quite a while, they were pretty close, then as the Kak grew he became more dominant, so that was that. Kaks are fun birds, who will get into things, totally adore water, and big chewers. Wood, or a branch of apple or hazelnut.
i'll look forward to hearing about your new baby, feel free to ask more
Oh ok cool! Would it be okay to keep mine in a medium sized cage why he is young and im taming him? He will be out from 9-8 apart from naps and eating as im on holidays till Feb. By then he could go with my tiel if they get on well or i can get him a new cage. What do you think?
One of the biggest mistakes in my mind is to give a new baby bird too much room. Not only it makes it harder to tame, i feel they can get hurt if they are frighted. If you are letting it out as you say you are, a smaller cage i think is the best way for now. Ive often put a young, or baby in a smaller cage, to help me tame it. Kaks are pretty bright birds, you will be amazed how quickly it will find the best perching places in your room. Your doing the best thing by getting your Kak so young, and if your tiel talks , your Kak may well end up talking too.
My Kaks will bathe in 4-5 inches of water, so dont bother with a new bath, just find a suitable dish, or the sink
One thing i would reccomend is a water bottle, Kaks really get messy with water, and ive converted all my birds now. I use two types, sippys, and the normal animal ones with a smaller tube.
Wow Scully thanks so much!!! So much advice yay hehe Now im extra excited!!! Ok im glad i dont have to get another huge cage right away And i will look into water bottles and find a big dish! thankyou so much!
Ok well so far i have got him a bird buddy (a green one) for him to snuggle, 4 toys coz i dont want to overwhelm him a ladder, a huge green bath! iodine bell, cuttle bone, a swing, he has 3 different kinds of perches and a scratch box with leaves, branches, a few toys, some straws and rafia in it to play with. Oh and i also bought him the water bottle today! Do i get him to start learning to use it on the first day home or get him onto it later??
i used raffia too, just hang a bunch up, and they nibble it to bits. use a normal water feeder along side a bottle, and he will slowy start to use it, then in time you can make your own mind which you prefer to use.
