There I was, removing Kath from the Kakariki aviary & just going out the door & my one and only Cinnamon Yellow Crown flies over my shoulder and out the door! 2nd in a week!!!
I put Kath with Matt & grab my nets.
The boy is hanging around, he seems a bit scared. I stalk him through the underbrush & he stays 2 foot ahead of me every time. Through the trees (lower branches), onto the wheelbarrow, then the fence, ground, trees & disappears.
I walk around calling out where are you boy? No answer of course!
Spot an odd green in the Cassia tree. It's him! Same stalking game. This time he disappears on the ground behind a gum tree.
I thrust the net on the left side of the tree & he darts into the low shrubs behind. I race to the shrub & can see him running towards the edge so I thrust a net at the edge of the shrub and he does a 180 and runs the other way so I thrust my other net at the other side (here I am straddling a 4 foot wide shrub!).
He stops to consider his options and my mind races calculating odds & variables.
I drop both nets & make a rugby tackle that would do the Wallabies proud, I have my prize!
He is wriggling & trying to bite! Aha! I've got you bite all you want I'm not letting go! OUCH!!
I realise the predicament I have myself in. A bird in my hands, on my belly on the ground & on my own (parents gone shopping). Now, ordinarily me being on the ground is very unusual as I try to avoid it at all costs - because I am big it's hard to move but also because I am partially crippled.
Now, what to do?
Next comes the part where my parents would be rolling around on the ground in hysterics! I manage to shove the bird in the net & secure it.
Then within the next 3 minutes I finally manage to get up. I grabbed the naughty boy & start walking towards the aviary only to have a weed trip me and nearly make me fall over!
Finally get him back in the aviary & he acts like the victim!!
What a lovely day!!
