Hi Guys This may well just be a case of me being paranoid, but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask. When I was sorting out the Kaks this morning Kiri temporarily came off her nest. She's been sitting on a new clutch since about 3 days before we lost little pickle - at the moment she is on 7 eggs. I have to be honest though she didn't look too good. She seems to have dropped quite a bit of weight, and was trembling quite badly. She has started her moult, so maybe that's part of it, but I'm just a bit worried that Kenny may not be feeding her as well as he should. He's in the middle of a very heavy moult himself at the moment. This is her second batch of eggs, and I had already decided no more babies after this, but didn't have the heart to take these eggs away from her. They get fresh fruit and veg each day, as well as fresh egg mix twice a day and fresh water at least twice daily. Am I being paranoid guys, or should I be thinking of intervening at this stage. I had thought of putting some millet into the nest with her, but wasn't sure if this would be a good idea or not. She only leaves her eggs for a very brief time at the moment - definitely not long enough for her to feed herself properly. Sorry to sound like a right royal worry wort, but I well ... I am !!! Any advice gratefully received.

I would be concerned about the trembling too. First thing that came to mind was calcium deficiency, but you seem to be giving enough egg. Pop a piece of cuttlebone where she can get to it as well. Definately isn't a problem to pop some foods in with her, or hang some just outside the box

The problem with kaks is they give over so much of themselves & with the moult as well, personally I would remove the eggs & nest box & let her concentrate on herself. Yes, you will lose any babies but it is better than losing Kiri. Do you have a darkened room you can put her in? Feed her some additional vitamin supplements as well as the usually fruits & veggies.

if that was Sugar, and ill look out for that now I would put the eggs in the bin...then have a good cry take nest box away, and just let her try and forget. Sugar should have been a penguin, so lots of baths, millet anything to nibble on, to take her mind off her brooding. Dog will often do the same after weaning pups, they loose condition, its hormones.

Hey Guys
Thank you so much for the response. Kiri and I had a long chat last night! She was out of the nest yesterday evening looking as fit as a flea (if somewhat scruffy!), not a tremble in sight, and eating like a horse. Kenny was also being mega-attentive and feeding her like crazy too.
I'd be surprised if they had any vitamin or mineral deficiencies as I have been giving all of my birds Avimix daily for the last 6 months (this is a multi-vitamin mix that also contains Nutrobal calcium supplement) as it does really seem to help the Kaks with their moults.
They have every type of supplement in the cage and love their cuttlebone, although lately they have been noshing through their lava stone block like wee demons.
They have fresh egg mix twice daily and their fave fruits are apples and melons. They also get grasses and greens such as spinach/parsley etc. I think they eat better than I do!!
Last night I plucked up the courage to take her eggs, but when I put my hand into the box she gave me her 'Scrat Face' (anyone who has seen the movie Ice Age will know the Scrat Face with the big eyes and the tear!).
Anyway, the long and short of it is that Kiri & I have cut a deal. I've told her (yes I know I'm bonkers!), that if we see anymore trembly nonsense before the weekend then her eggs will have to go. I have also done quite a bit of soul searching on this one to make sure that I'm not just doing this as the easy option for me. I can honestly say that if anything the decision to let her keep them was harder than the one to take them away, as I'm really scared that she'll suffer as a result. On balance though I think at the moment that this is the right thing for her, and I just hope I'm right. I'll be watching her like a hawk over the next few days, and will keep you guys posted.
Many thanks again for all the advice - it really is so very much appreciated.
PS, In the event that I do need to remove them (as I'm still very prepared to do this if it proves necessary), does anyone know of anyone who might want to incubate them? The first eggs are due to hatch inside the next week to 10 days, and if there is a way to save them too, then that would be great.

Ellen, please dont think im asking a silly question, its just a thought but is it the same next box and materials that she bred in last time? if it is then it may be that you need to change the materials and scrub the box as bacteria builds up in them. if not, i would suggest a vet as a "just in case" as they can be very crafty and hide any other symptoms to give you any clues that they are ill. what you are feeding them is perfect so it cant be that, it cant be them getting chilly as we have had lovely weather the last week or so and the vitamins and minerals are ruled out as you already supplement them. so there really cant be anything else that you could possibly do for them that your not already doing, your doing a fantastic job and they couldnt ask for more. i would personally take her to a vet just to get her checked out, dont worry about the eggs while your gone, daddy will take over if he thinks they are getting cold. keep us updated
