I reckon that you don't need to worry too much about feeding her tonight, she would have been being fed in the nest until you had to take her out so she shouldn't be too hungry... she won't be used to taking food from you either so probably the chances of her taking some are slim. Leave some of the wet egg food in there with her and when she gets hungry, she'll probably work it out... she is 5 weeks old and so about the age where they start to feed themselves anyway isn't she? She'll probably be pretty scared, injured, out of her home and without her brother, so she may not want to move about too much.

What awful news. I have handraised budgies before, I assume it is the same for other birds. Use a teaspoon, and a sloppy mix of egg and biscuit mix and water, or you can use weetbix and water. Keep it warm! Cold mix will cause all kinds of problems. To keep it warm, pop the cup containing the mix in a bowl of hot water, and keep changing the mix on the teaspoon. Theys hould eat it quite messily. #cheesy# #cheesy# #cheesy# I'm not sure of the temp for kaks, with tiels it is above blood temp, so, try to make it warmer than your blood.
If they won't spoon feed, then you will need a syringe, without the needle. You need to make the egg and biscuit mix as runny as you can, pop the syringe (watch out for air!) as far back in the beak as you can (like Mummy does!) and squirt slowly

Well it's 4.30am & I've managed to get 2 feeds into baby. Thank you so much for your response Lin - I think I may have overdone the feed a bit as she looks like she's had too much christmas dinner How often should I be feeding her - is it every 2 hours?? I've also put some really sloppy egg food on a saucer in the cage along with a small dish of water. I've also sprinkled some seed on the floor just in case she starts to want to pick at it. Is there anything else that i should be doing at the moment??

The most important feed of the day is the evening one - as it should last all night! Second most important feed is brekky, after that you really shouldn't panic, if they are decent feeds. The baby is quite old? With the egg and biscuit mix you've popped on a suacer, mix a tiny bit of cracked seed with it (get a rolling pin and bash the seed, just loosens the husks for them) Same with the seed you've scattered, crack it first. Don't forget some fresh foods, if it's not too hot to leave them all day. Spray them with water, and when she has a nibble, she will get some moisture too! Pop a box or something to hide in in the cage, so that she feels really cosy. Sounds to me like you've done all you can. You can also feed baby food to the bird, either off a spoon, or in a dish if you like as well. I found my tiels ate the baby food more enthusiastically than anything else. Find what she enjoys, and leave that out whilst you are at work.

oops, forgot to say it is important that the crop empties between feeds (shouldn't be a problem with you at work.) Otherwise they get sour crop, which can kill. I used to just make sure the crop emptied overnight, wasn't too concerned during the day. Just try to do things as much like mummy would, and you'll be right

Just a quick update guys. A huge thank you to Lin - I was in a tail spin when I found Pickle dead last night & Lin's advice got me through the night. I even woke up an avian vet at 2am for advice!! The lady was lovely & I would have happily got in the car with Lilli there and then if she thought I needed to!
The good news is that little Lilli is still with us this morning, & I've just given her some breakfast. She's having a nap right now & seems bright enough. My major problem now is the fact that I work an average of 12 hours a day & am worried sick about being around enough to feed her properly.
The offer of delivering Lilli and cage to someone who can offer her the level of care that she needs is very genuine - if you think you can help guys my priority is very much my little bird. She is a very cheeky girl with loads of character & I really really want to give her the best start in life. I will be gutted to see her go, but more gutted if I lose her due to my own neglect.
Once again a huge thanks to everyone for their help & support so far - you guys really are a life line!

You did well with your little one Batty Good old Lin to save the day. Neeing as old as this one. You did well with feeding to. Most older birds can be hard to feed. Since you work you can leave this one at home. Morning and night feeds should be fine. Budgies are fast to wean at a early age. If it was a tiel you would need to feed more then twice a day at this age.
Good luck
