Hi there! I'm new to the forum. In 2 weeks I'll be picking up my new rainbow lorikeet "Yogie", which was in urgent need of a new home. He's 11 months old and is hand raised. I've never had a bird before, so this seems like the perfect place to start.
I've spent the last hour looking up information on the net, particularly regarding feeding. The previous owner told me he has been fed a diet consisting of commercial lorikeet mix (dry), apples, and milk arrowroot biscuits. Somehow this doesn't seem right to me..... Can lorikeets eat milk arrowroot biscuits?
Can anybody give me advice about feeding? I found a recipe for wet mix which is as follows:
o 1 litre water o 1 tablespoons pollen o 1 tablespoons of honey o 0.5 litres of high protein baby cereal o half teaspoon of calcium carbonate o half teaspoon of multivitamins o 0.1 litres of powdered skimmed milk
However I'm not sure about some of these ingredients. What is pollen, and where can I buy it? Can I use glucose syrup instead of honey? Where do I buy calcium carbonate? And what do they mean by multivitamins?
Sorry about all the questions. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything exactly right. Thanks!

Hi freswood - welcome to the forum! If you give Karen a call she'll issue you with your offical Bird Crazy straight jacket Congratulations on your new Lori - we have several Lori owners on here, so I'm sure they'll be able to give you oodles of information. I've had a quick google, and found this link - not sure if it helps ... www.parrotsociety.org.au/articles/art_001.htm#Diet

Thanks for the replies! Thankfully I found out that the local pet stores stock wet mix in powder form, which makes my life a whole lot easier! Today I spoke to an avian vet on the phone, who recommended a diet as follows:
- wet and dry mix - fruit such as apple, banana, pear - cooked pumpkin, silverbeet
is there anything important missing from the list?

Hi Freswood & welcome to Bird Crazy!
Loribabe currently has a lorikeet & I'm sure she can supply you with any additional needs for feeding your new fid.
I used to have a rainbow lorikeet and one thing she loved was when I dug in the garden & fed her ant larvae - yes I know it was gross but she went all googoo over them!

Thanks for that! Ack I've just realised the need to bird-proof our house. We just realised that we're going to need to cover up our fireplace. Mum's been making some calls about buying a large piece of perspex to place over it.

Another thing I was wondering was about cleaning the cage. I've read that you should clean the cage every day - how thorough do you need to be? Is it just cleaning the poo, or is it a full bleach? How often do you need to clean it thoroughly?

Hi freeswood and yogi, and welcome to our forum
here is a recipie I have been given for harriette, and she adores it
500g of raw sugar 500g full cream milk powder 500g dextose or glucose 500g rice flour 3/4 cup of sustogen 4 packets of farex
This makes about 2 and a half kilos. Will last for ages. Thru the winter, I sometimes use this as a wet/warm mix, and mix it with some lukewarm water and honey. This can also be used as a dry mix as well, but make sure you have a water troph near the dry mix as the lorries go for the water straight away.
I have harriette outside on the veranda, and give her cage a good washout with the hose. I do this about once a month. But when I had her inside I had to do it everyday as they attract fruit flies and become a pest.
If you are keeping your bird inside, give the cage a clean out every second day this will be fine. I dont personally feed harriette arrowroot biscuits, but all my other guys love them. I feed her oranges and apples as well, with the apples make sure you take all the seeds out as they are posinous to birds. The skin is fine but they tend to eat only the inside anyways. Red and green apples are both fine.
You will have alot of fun with yogie. They are a really character type of bird and heaps of personality.
I hope I have helped with your questions. At night also cover the cage with a sheet or towel as the lorries tend to wake up early.

lol just read your post dawn, bonkas me never, just a bit crazy every now and then. The pm button under your avatar is the little green bird. Just click on that and it will lead the way. Calcium and pollen, you should be able to buy at your local produce store, or if your not sure just drop into your petshop.

Thanks Loribabe, that was all very helpful. So do you just spray the cage with a hose to remove the visible mess? Do you ever use a cleaning product?
Hehe that neighbours would go nuts if they saw me cleaning a cage with a hose! Darn water restrictions. Though, the dams have gone up today for the first time this year!

Lol we are lucky where w are in beerburrum, we arent on any restrictions. But you should still be able to clean bird aviaries/cages under the laws. It would be useful to check it out. No I dont use any cleaning products/detergents. If your buying a new cage or avairy it would be best to wipe it over with vinegar and warm water, this will kill any germs. And if your birds attract mites, I have been told to also clean cages down with dettol and branches. This is all natural and wont harm your birds.

I use vinegar to clean my cages. Just clean the poo and food off every couple of days and a give it a good scrubbing once a month. You can try nearly any fruit and veggie except avocado. Don't worry too much about the apple seeds as they need heaps of them to cause any problems. Mine don't like them anyway., I give mine dry mix every day and wet mix only once a week as they tend to make their own wet mix. Make sure you place the water and food bowls next to each other so they can do this.
