I have an Eastern Rosella who is 8 months old. Recently he has gotten very noisy and I've been told if I get him some company he may quieten down. I just wondered if anyone can tell me what is the best type of bird to put in with him? Another Rosella? I say him - that is my other question - how do you sex a Rosella? If I could figure out how, I'd post a picture!

Pretty hard to sex them under a year old. I love the Rosella song, very sweet sound. In my experience nothing quietens a Rosella down - not even another Rosella. If he's very noisy then it's probably safe to say male. Females tend to be a bit quieter.

I have had him for just other 3 months and I think the place I got him still has 2 others from the same group we got him from. I may have a look and see.

Nope, they don't have them. I'm discovering it is totally the wrong time of year to get a new bird! I have one man who is going to try and source a hen for me so I'll see what happens there. The other option is to maybe put a kalariki in with him.

Separate cages would be the way to go. Kiwi has a rosella and kakariki - in separate cages. I really don't know how they'd go together and I wouldn't recommend it. During breeding season rosella male's can become very aggressive and can kill another bird - particularly if the same sex.

If I can't get a Rosella hen I think I'll either not get another bird, or get one for a different cage. I was really lucky - the parrot cage I have was second hand and only cost £25 (about $50) I have a cage big enough for a pair of small finches or a single budgie, so I might wait until I get a bigger cages - don't want more finches.

Kiwi (Kakariki) and Joey (Rosella) have their fly time out together every day now and they get on fine, they will perch together quite happy and Joey even puts up with Kiwi going into her cage and playing with her toys, even eating her food. The only thing she gets the tiniest bit upset is when Kiwi takes a bath in her water - Joey still doesn't get aggressive and will just nudge Kiwi out the way. I'd never put them in the same cage though as I know Kiwi would push her luck one day, she's a cheeky one
