I just got another email from the bourke guy and (i had told him the size of my aviary) and he said that my aviary (1.5m x 1.5m) would be large enough for 1 pair but NOT MUCH ELSE?! Is this true? Are they THAT active that they need all that space all for themselves? ?? Obviously if this is the case i can't get them and this makes me think that i should probably stop (or at least slow down) breeding budgies. To look at my aviary all the budgies have plenty of perching space and room to get out of each others way. This has got me concerned.

2 bourkes + 20? budgies..... i would probably stop at that many too... my aviary isnt much bigger and i wouldnt put more than 20 birds in max.
i dont know anything about bourkes but i would be interested to know... maybe for future refference...lol

Yeah i know, money wouldn't be the problem, i think it would be the space it would take up and the extra budgies. I have been dying to convert our useless garden shed which hasn't been touched in years into another aviary.

HiBea, I think your main problem would be the number of budgies that you have in an aviary this size. Rosa Bourke's are only about the size of budgies, so an aviary this size would not really be a problem for them to breed in but with 20 budgies it would be too small for breeding. However as Bourke's are really non aggressive birds I wouldn't let them breed in an aviary with budgies as budgies tend to be a lot more domineering and aggressive, especially female budgies and they have been known to kill others babies or worse still kill the other birds just to have the nest box. You can house them together just as long as their is no nest boxes. Cheers Anna

Well today me and my friend create MUCH more perching space!! I don't colony breed budgies and wouldn't breed the bourkes in the aviary anyway. I'll post photos in the budgie pictures forum but basically there's now 4 large natural branches as well as four 1.5m long dowel perches (2 square and 2 round). I read that rather than flying space it's the amount of perch space available so do you think with the changes there would be enough space? I would definitely not add more birds if it would crowd the aviary but the budgies spread out so much now, it's great!

Sounds like you have solved your problem with the extra branches and the Bourke's should be fine in the aviary now as they really don't take up that much room . and as long as they have some flying space they will be quite happy. I have a suspended aviary about this size that houses my disabled birds and lots of branches for them to climb on and they seem to be content plus they get to chew the gum branches which stops them from getting bored. Cheers Anna

As long as you don't intend to breed them in with the udgies they should be fine. Bourkes also like to sit on things close to the floor. I have a hollow tree trunk on the bottom of my cage that the Bourkes almost exclusively use. The budgies leave it alone.

I think even the 26 budgies are going to be cramped in those dimensions. One thing we have to remember about aviaries is that even though they are outside, they're essentially just a really large cage. The difference is that the budgies never get "out of cage" time. This is fine if you've got a huge aviary and not many birds but when you have a smaller aviary with a lot of birds, they're not getting nearly as much space as it looks like. I think the emphasis should be more on providing your current birds with more useable space rather than how many more birds you can justifiably fit into the space you have.
