I'm a great lover of forage boxes for my birds. with Kaks its a must have, as its what they do! but for all my birds they have something to forage in for food, chewys toys and other bits. It a natural thing for birds to do, and they get excited when i renew and freshen them up, which is about every 3 weeks, and which i did today.
Kaks at the moment have a cat-litter tray with a rim, so it all stays in, thats in thier main box. I have a smaller one outside, which is a plastic sweet jar! but again it keeps everything in.
Biggles has a chinchilla bath, which is fully enclosed, except the hold to get in, and Kaeci, and the budgies have a tiel size bath.
I use all dry things, and i start with a bunch of timothy hay which has lots of safe grasses to nibble on. I use dried dandilion leaves, and a mix for rabbits with marigolds, parsley, camomille, grasses and other things. Its got a lovely lemon grass smell when its fresh.
Then i chuck in millet seed, (i dont buy many sprays anymore) dried fruits, peanuts, shredded paper, anything really. In Biggles,(and the Kaks) he gets a couple of foot toys, balsa and his feathers , peanuts, chillies, dried veg, egg food, 1/2 cracked walnuts, and i cut up some coconut fibre, perhaps some straws. Most of the food falls to the bottom, so they all have to dig around for it.
I try to chuck in more small food, including thier own seed, as its makes them work a bit for it, especially withThe Kaks. It gets topped up with foody bits when i think it needs to.
They dont seem to mess in them, so the hay and grasses stay pretty well clean.
They enjoy most of whats in there, and all the grasses are a natural food too.
I also make things for them to chew down and find a surprise food store. With the Kaks they are so good at it , most things dont last a few days!
I bought two willow balls, and stuffed them with peanuts in shells, dried fruit, etc. They made four days! now thats a record for me, as the willow balls were about 3 layers.
Last week, i filled whole peppers, and left a small lid. Its was full of a mix i did for them. All the birds in the avairy had a go, but i would'nt do a whole one for the birds indoors, i feel a whole pepper is a bit much. I do a half, and fill that, but i put a cardboard lid on, with a few slits. Then on the kebab holder, i put a row of woodbeads to keep the lid down.
Biggs ate the lot almost, but the others nextdoor, just ate the inside.
I will also hollow out the core and more, of apples and fill those, keep a cut lid again, so they will stay on the skewer.
Often fill those with an Egg mix, and sprouts, as they love apples, and soon eat the outside.
Anyway anyone with any other ideas to beat Birdy Boredom
