I read the top update... my thought are in agreement with you about the Middle East. I pray that peace will come, and a better year. Riamfada seems to be such a character! I've had to use "reverse psychology" with the budgies... they all hang out together, wild. Even though they have a big aviary to themselves they still manage to get into trouble!

Glad everything is settled between you and Riam despite the misunderstanding... the bond between you two is something I admire very much. I must admit I had the quite the laugh at your last line about your wife! Sounds like you had a great trip! Thank you for your updates. ;D

welcome Shanlung, it is an honour to have you on the forum. i have just been on your web page and am in awe too. you are an inspiration to us all. i am going to get 2 'Sunday' conures this weekend and am thinking about starting clicker training. i will not be clipping their wings and they will have full access to my home, but am worried what will happen if the escape, if a door gets left open. was thinking i may try clicker training with a whistle for recall. so if they do get out they could hear me from a long distance." do you think this could work?" i will be reading more information from your website. i love the diary of your travels with Tinkerbell. you are so generous, to share your life and experience with so many people around the world. i have just joined another forum and i know everyone would love you to join everything, but www.exoticforums.co.uk have not long started and have just put a bird section on. I am trying to get more bird lovers to join, as many youngsters are on their too and keep all sorts so it is a good place if you have many interests. hope to see you there.

Twizle, If you are not clipping the wings, you will be in for a treat and magic will enter your life with your birds. Such wonderful times must also carry a heavy price and responsibilty on your part. Go into Tinkerbell Legacy or Part 2 to find out the essentials of living with a flighted bird. The flight perimeter must be protected against the worse scenerio. If you tend to forget to close the door, you install double doors or rig up self closing doors the way I did. Preparing for the worse will help you to avoid the worse , especially later when complaceny sets in. If your bird is flighted, it is absolutely essential training be done. It is not only the bird be trained, you must let the bird train you too. The training is to enable communication and understanding between you and your bird. Clicker training is so important as can be seen first with Tinkerbell and then with Yingshiong and now with Riamfada. Read that in Tinkerbell Legacy, as well as the mentality of your charge. Use a small room for initial training, and if you can get recalls regularly, then you allow your bird into the entire house (after you double secure the flight perimeter. Here is an update. You've got such a neat setup for taking your birds out with you! Just out of curiousity, have you heard of flightsuits? I use them with my conure, Jasper, and I'm very happy with them. I had a similar, less serious situation as you, with Riamfada attacking your wife. Jasper will step up for anyone usually, but the other day he decided that there was no way he was going to let anyone but me stroke him, and shrieked and flew away from anyone who tried... hopefully he doesn't get to the biting stage. Jasper is in the post-weaning "mouthy" stage right now anyway, so we're both getting lots of practice with the "gentle" command...

Hi Liz, Of course I know of flight suit, and of all other commercial harnesses as well. Dont you feel that they all are no match for that Tinkerbell harness that I designed and made? The URL below give the summary of what I had done as well as leading to how you can make Tinkerbell harness to your parrot and the training required. shanlung.livejournal.com/8284.htmlIn links embedded in above, I am even more explicit as to why other harnesses are bad, so bad that they are criminal. Comparing Tink harness to any of the other commercial harness is like comparing a Ferrari to a 20 year old pickup truck with 4 flat tires at best. Tink harness weigh in at 3 grams, as against 100++ grams for the lightest of any of them. And Tink harness designed for maximum comfort and ease of wearing as well as fitted exactly to Tinkerbell and Riamfada. All the others decided for you that 'one size fits all' , and that they can use bells, hooks , whistles and kitchen sink that 'allow' you to fit to your poor bird what they sold you . That to me is like buying a pair of jeans 7 sizes bigger than you required but as long as the belt can hold it to your hips, that pair of jeans is all right for you to wear. Maybe those commercial sellers of parrot harness and flightsuits know something that I am too stupid to know. I gave freely of my design to all from 2003, asking only that they make a donation to Durell Wildlife Conservation Trust www.durrell.org/Home/or any other wildlife conservation bodies of their choice. That above harness was refined in 18 June 2005, from a design already superior to any harness in sight at that time. www.livejournal.com/~shanlung/2005/06/18/And a commercial harness came out in Oct 2005 claiming to be the lightest harness for parrots and weigh in at 100++ grams and charging US$50 You can see that remarkable similarity to Tinkerbell harness. What more can I say. People have stolen money from church poor boxes havent they? Why not steal money fom wildlife who cannot speak back. Here is the latest. The visiting IRN you had a picture of is beautiful! Glad you had a good camping trip! Thank you for all the information about the Tink harnesses. I am looking into that. However, I just want to be clear... -I paid less than $50 US dollars for three flight suits, a lanyard, and shipping. -The flight suits come in many different sizes, and and can be hand sewn in minutes to custom fit. -Jasper's flight suit is light enough that he can fly long distances to me with it on, even though his wings are clipped. (The wing clipping is temporary, by the way, I'm letting it grow out from the mild clip the breeder used) -The flight suit is comfortable enough that Jasper often falls asleep in it! -The optional lanyard for the flight suit not only keeps Jasper from flying into trouble if gets spooked, but keep my house clean. He can be with me for 4 hours straight while wearing the flightsuit, with no poo on me, my furniture, or, most importantly, on his vent, so no danger of infection. That said, I am open to other options. I just wanted to make sure that we both had the same thing in mind when talking about flight suits. I don't mean for a minute to undermine what you have done for your birds... it is very clear just how much you care for them, and you've given me a lot to think about.

That would be great to see the space station light! Riamfada has come along so wonderfully, you must be proud of her success. Was the oasis natural or man made do you know?

Hi Liz, Sorry if I came on a bit strong in my reply on harness. I know you meant well. Thank you for letting me have another chance to restate my position on Tinkerbell harness. First Tinkerbell, and then Riamfada, they were out with me almost from dawn to dusk and later. The harness that I designed had to be that comfortable to them to the point that they eagerly thrust their head into the harness loop and assisted me in the wearing of their harness. Karen, Wadi Bani Khalid is totally natural (other than for the sheds and shelters from the sun. It is a series of cascading pools from the rock formation. My wife got back from her driving lesson on Monday 11 May 09. She passed her Part 1 on her 3rd attempt. The oil drums behaved themselves finally and did not lurch out of their line to hit her car when she was reversing. oh Shanlung I almost fell off my chair laughing! I think if I ever go to Oman I will leave the licence at home and get taxi to drive me instead. I think poor Katie got a small dose of brain boil forgetting where it was a better place to be. I am glad you stuck by your friend and got her back into the car.
