A proper diet helps a budgie live out his full lifespan (and often a bit more). So rather, it is when only seed are fed, the lifespan is actually being decreased.
Birds can eat almost anything that we eat (that is healthy). But don't feed avacado, onions, chocolate, seeds and pips (such as apple seeds.. strawberry seeds are okay however) or alchohol.
Pellets are a good idea, you could even feed pellets and seed mixed together.
CALCIUM is very important for birds, especially females, so provide a cuttlefish bone, also these foods have a good calcium source:
* Broccoli
* Spinach
* Beet greans
* Yams
* Parsley
Also, a lot of pet birds lack VITAMIN A, so try and feed food with a good source of vitamin A, such as:
* Yellow peaches
* Beet greans
* Broccoli
* Yams
* Spinach
* Parsley
* Dandelion leaves
Note that, surprisingly, dandelion leaves are really nutritious. And with broccoli, the leaves are the best, then the flower bits, then the stem.
Other food that is good is cooked brown rice, green peas, carrot, banana, cucumber, green beans, tomato, cooked meat.
You can also feed apple, orange (although not really needed because birds generate their own vitamin C), corn, cooked pasta (or raw), grapes, grass, cooked eggs, whole-wheat toast, and egg and biscuit mix.
If feeding food that is high in phosphorous such as bananas, beans, corn, rice, and grapes, birds need, I think it was 2-4 times the amount of calcium, so be sure to provide food high in calcium too when feeding these.
