With any animals around, emergencies can happen. It is an idea to have all the basic equipment stored in one easy to reach place! Mine is kept next to my human first aid kit. Here is a basic outline of what you will need, the more experienced you are, then the more things you could add
Phone numbers
Avian Vet Phone Number
Emergency Avian Vet After Hours Number
Poison Control 24 hour number
Cages
Hospital Cage – a small cage to reduce movement, and that is easy to keep warm. A small aquarium may be suitable.
Heat Source for hospital cage – a table lamp, hot water bottle, etc
Temperature Gauge for Hospital Cage – to ensure the temperature is kept at the correct level
Transport Cage
General Equipment
Towel – to wrap bird in for easy inspection
Magnifying glass
Tweezers
Scissors
Nail Clippers
Metal file
Cornstarch – to stop bleeding
Torch - with good batteries
Eyedropper
Syringe
Sterile cloths
Disposable gloves
Scales _ so you can keep an eye on the weight(it is a good idea to regularly weigh your bird, so you know quickly if there has been a weight loss)
Nonstick sterile pads
Paper based first aid tape
Vetwrap or gauze
Betadine or similar antiseptic
antibiotic cream (avian)
sterile saline solution (for cleaning injuries)
Please be aware that some items have a 'Useby' date. Check your kit regularly to keep up to date.
