The likelihood of a bird ban was leaked to The Courier-Mail by a council source, who said: "It's in the early stages but I think the councillors who want to get this ban have the numbers to do it." Redland council, in the state's southeast, is the first to consider a ban on pet birds, as part of its review of animal management laws. The ban was discussed by councillors at a closed meeting and is expected to be put to a vote in coming months. The source said the concept was in the draft stages. Poll: Should pet birds be banned over noise concerns? RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said he had never heard of such a bizarre proposal. "There is just as much noise if not more coming from wild parrots or even a dog barking, than a pet bird," he said. Bird lover Kristy Peek, 20, of Wellington Point, said she would be devastated to give up her cockatoo and three parrots. "It's absolutely ridiculous of the council to even be considering banning birds." Council CEO Gary Stevenson said all proposals discussed at the meeting were still in the "concept" stage, and residents would be advised "in due course".
