hi everyone, i have just joined up. I have 2 cockatiels called Jake and Jesse ( she is the tame one) 4 budgies, a red factor canary, a greenfinch cross canary and 10 zebra finches!!!!!!!! the canaries and finches share an aviary. I have had Jake since May this year but he still wont step up onto my finger!! he will take food from me though. Jesse, i have had since July and she was tame in a week!! She loves to be scratched anywhere on her head!! even under her beak! If anyone has any advice on how to win Jake over i would be so grateful! i have tried millet and all sorts!! he is very weary when i put my hand near his feet!! He has let me stroke his head a little through the bars of the cage but nothing else. he mock bites quite a bit too, they come out for exercise regularly but can be difficult to get back in!! any advice would be great!

Welcome to the forum! isnt it amaizing how their little personalities can be so different! one so easy to train the other not so! i would say just keep up the training, sometimes they are just stuborn and wont do as well as we want them to. maybe with him seeing what she does, he will settle down and get with the program, lol
ps, we love pics around here! lol

hi i have put up a couple of pics in the cockatiel pictures section. Jesse decided to jump into a bowl of cheerios!!! they both love them!!! but not too many! She is such a character! I am not sure how old Jake is as i got him from a petshop, they gave me a hatch date for him but it didnt add up to his age in weeks which they gave me. I also am pretty sure he was around 6 months old when i bought him now that i have read up about them. He does seem quite grumpy sometimes, hence his nickname "MR GRUMPY FEATHERS" but i never call him that!! its what the kids thought up!! Jesse is known as "MESSY JESS" she is little miss piggy to me!! but so sweet, she almost fell asleep in my hand the other night as i stroked her. She also loves to preen my hair! Jesse was definately a baby when i got her i cold tell by her feathers and she was a lot smaller than she is now. I got her from a breeder, they never said wheather she was hand reared or not but she was kept with other tiels in an indoor aviary. Jake has always been around and watched Jesse on my arm, when she has been on my shoulder and when i first got her on my hand, but still he isnt too sure! Thanks for your advice. Alexandra

Welcome to the flock, I'm sure Jake will come round in time. I got my four budgies in June. Harry was bold and took millet from me and after a while of watching him scoff all the treats, jelousy got the better of sky and she did the same. The same thing happened with stepping on to my finger, I've kept budgies all my life but for the first time since my first budgie these are becoming tame enough to sit on my finger. Find out his favorite food, feed him through the bars if he feels safer with this. Talk quietly to him and sit near the cage, so he gets used to you being close, but not in his space. If he will take food through the bars, try holding the treat in the cage near but not in front of him. After learning that you aren't a threat I'm sure he'll come on leaps and bounds. In the last month Minty who would take food from my hand will now step on to my finger to get to broccoli held in my other hand. Talk quietly and move slowly is the best advice I can offer. It may take a long time, but when you love them it makes it so much more special when they do trust you enough to come to you. My grumpy budgie Kingfisher Blue will take food from me and has just put one foot on me. She jumps back when she realises shes done it but I stay still and I'm sure she'll come round in the end. Good things are worth waiting for as my Mum used to say.

thanks for all your advice. Jake has been taking food from my hand for a while but he wont step onto my hand, he just reaches out for it, if he cant get it he just leaves it!! even his favourites! I think he is going to be a stubborn little boy, but so cute!! they are out at the moment and went crazy when i first opened the cage!! i thought they were trying to dive bomb me!! They are so funny! dont you just love 'em?!!!
