As I mentioned in my intro, I'm new to bird keeping and I am looking into a species to buy. I was thinking about either starting off with finches, or pigeons/doves. I am however open to any suggestions for my first bird(s).

Hi there, are you looking for a tame bird or one best for aviary?

Do you want small birds, large birds, medium sized birds? Colourful birds, doesn't matter? Life expectancy? Parrots, fowl, etc? What's your fancy?
Maybe for a first timer maybe you'd prefer to something easier like Zebra finches?

To be perfectly honest I'm really open to everything. I've never kept a bird before (I pet sit my sister baby cockatiel but thats different) so I really don't have a "Fancy" yet. I will however give a list of birds I'm interested in... Finches -Zebra -Gouldian -Java Finch Pheasants Button Quail Doves Pigeons Barred Parakeet Eclectus Parrot and Conures
Here is a list of what I am interested in. I know the final decision will be up to me but what do you guys suggest?

As a first timer I wouldn't advise getting an eclectus as they take a lot of work and are quite a large bird. Conures can be great but can be very loud. I'd go with the zebbies if I were you. Gouldians are gorgeous but a bit more pricey than zebbies and can be prone to dying unexpectedly, especially in the cold weather.

I think it depends on what you want a bird for. Once you get into the tiels, conures an small parrots, I think they will need alot more of you attention. More like part of the famiily..out of the cage type. I have never hadfinches or parrakeets and don't know how much time you will need to spend with them

Here are some helpful links www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/acquiring.phpI would definately go for zeebee's as a first bird they are nice and simple to keep easy diets and best kept in pairs. Please do lots of research into whatever bird you are considering buying. It is better to find out before you buy that the bird is too difficult to keep than do a bad job of looking after one through lack of knowledge. This is what I should have done I bought a pair of grass finches or Hecks as they are also called coz they were beautiful. I didn't know anything about them and didn't really know how to look after them properly. I put them in the aivery for a few days when the weather was nice and they died, they wern't hardy enough for outdoors and I didn't know that. It is a terrible thing to make a creature suffer for your ignorance, even if it isn't intentional. Good luck for your search. Billie x

hey I personally think that if it is a pet bird that you want out of the cage try budgies or maybe cockatiels. and if your looking for aviary birds than zebra finches or maybe java sparrows. lovebirds apparently can get quite bitey but ive never had them so im not too sure if this is true. I am no expert but i hope this helps.

If you are a new breeder,l remember (many years ago?) Zebra Finches were are great start for me, after Sparrows and Canaries..the male's have great personality and this breed are easy to care for.Add a nest and you won't be dissapointed..
