Hi Everyone I had an accident this morning dropped a drinker which broke, used the spare which I then needed to replace so we went to the pet shop and OMG the most gorgeous violet budgie was there, black button eyes baby bars and sooooo adorable. Well it was love at first sight, but I was strong and came home without him. We have a nice big cage and four beautiful budgies which are almost a year old. I read the budgie book and it said you could introduce partner birds if they were under a year old and the new bird was very young. I begged and begged and my wonderful husband phoned the store the bird was still there and we went over to collect him. I have the normal confusion about a bird this young boy vs girl the cere looked blue in the shop but in normal light here at home it looks much more pink/lilac/blue it does have a slight white edge so do you reckon it might be a girl??? Its still quite jumpy so one it's had a few days to settle I'll take some photos. No name for sure yet but it's so little and a bit crazy so at the mo its being called Tiny Clanger. (UK childrens animation had cute pink 'aliens' and tiny clanger was the youngest....it was a great show honest DH wants naming rights as I named the other 4 he wants to call it Florence as he was a great Magic Roundabout fan. I assosiate that name with older ladies. And this one is far to cute. How will I go about introducing this new bird to an established gang, do I need to make sure it has a partner of the opposite sex before they could go in. Are even numbers very important. We are on the look out for a young grey (DH choice) to be a partner. Not looking to breed, just to be buddies for each other. I've quoted Battie to DH that she doesn't always have even numbers, is that right Battie? Sorry I have neglected you all, hope you will forgive me. Hugs Billie

once quarantine is over, you can introduce them with their flying time - as long as there is no fighting they should be ok housed together does it have white rings around the nostrils? if it does its a girl, if not its a boy (i think thats right isnt it karen? ) i used to LOVE the magic roundabout Doogle would be a good name for number 2 (the gray one that hasnt been bought yet lol) no problem of course you are forgiven!! but next time we'll have an absent note please lol just kidding #norty# cant wait to see photos!!

No white nostrils, just lilac/pink pale blue col cere. As I mentioned in the shop the light was different and the cere looked quite blue. Probably boy then you think. DH says grey will be called Zebedee or storm, or possibly Dylon #rolleyes# . Will have to hope they will show their happiness or displeasure of each other by just having cages next to each other when the time comes. DH has trophies on a cabinet so room just not safe for birds to fly, hense the plenty big cage. I think DH is a convert, he was fine about us getting 4 instead of two originally and when I mentioned the extra couple yesterday he didn't say absolutely not so , I did promise that the last one we get will be the grey he has mentioned liking several times. The pet shop is contacting breeder to see if there are any on the way. Baby has been going frantic to get out of the cage and near the other birds. There isn't really another room that the cage can go in so the quarantine is 'across the room' from the big cage. The small cage is covered with a cloth on 3 sides while it settles but it has seen the other and has been bonkers all day. Ifancy calling it Spike after Spike Milligan as its is batty and makes us laugh. Or Sweetie coz it's so cute but imagine DH sitting in the vet and them calling that name out ;D. Hugs Billie (glowing with new Mum happiness) ;D

It certainly sounds like a boy from your description of the cere but of course, without an actual picture I can't be sure.

I have posted a pic on the budgie photos section. I have a question though he 'Tiny' acts perfectly normal then walks to the end of the perch holds the perch with one foot, the cage bars with the other, then looks over his left shoulder and leans right back and round, a bit like if you waved a toy over a cats head and it tracks it but with no provocation. He does this every so often, doesn't make any difference whether the cloth is over the cage or not so it isn't that he is trying to look at something out of sight. He leaned so far back earlier that his head almost touched the perch on the right side. It is only in this one place in the cage he does it and always looking over the same shoulder and in the same position. Is it nerves or is he brain damaged! Last time I saw a bird do a move like that it was following a stroke. Tiny acts and moves perfectly normal just has these odd moments from time to time. You know when he's going to do it as he grabs the wire and starts leaning around. Is he bonkers Billie

Here he is I think I'm going to call him Tiny after Tiny Clanger (kids tv of the 1970s coz he's the youngest and a bit crazy).

Baby Budgies often do the most wierdest antics. They have a settling down period, and sometimes when Harvey was a baby i thought he was a real dinny with his antics. Darcy was the same, she used to tumble upside down, and roll over at the bottom of the cage. hes so pretty

Baby Budgies often do the most wierdest antics. hes so pretty Poor Tiny was totally phased by the solid part at the bottom of the cage, if he flew to the floor/ or fell if he missed a perch you keep hearing a fluttering and beak tapping where he is flying at it but without enough height to get back up to the start of the bars. He is getting better now and usually flies to a perch rather than trying to fly to the bars but it was hard not to laugh, then I felt all sorry for him. Poor ditsy baby #rolleyes# We have had the cage completely uncovered for the first time today and he has been fine. He has a new toy, a string of balls, to replace the mirror I had to take out coz he attacked it. Settling really well and if i talk to the other birds and not him he starts squawking in anger. He does well in the budgie swearing fights and holds his own. Billie

Tiny update He is doing just fine, he has settled really well. Tiny has had a few baths even though it is still more of a paddle he does lean forward in there to drink the water and get a wet front for his trouble. He has sort of got the hang of broccoli, he shreds it, I hope he eats some of it, but it doesn't spray as far as millet so I'm happy. Tiny was a star and came to eat from a small 1" piece of millet that I held, first with the millet and my hand outside the cage and now will take it if I hold the millit in the cage Billie

Today's achievements... What a star, he got his front wet in the bath today. And for a millet bribe he sat on my fingers and on my flat hand . He is being very rude to the food clip , for such a young bub he is trying to have babies with it! Its Taz all over again! Hopefully once his quatentine is over and he is in with the others he will have too much to do to be 'rude' with things. One question though, in the big cage the other birds are paired and snogging for England! If I put Tiny in when they are so hormonal will they accept him ok or would they take any attempta from him at making friends for muscling in on boy/girlfriends??? Billie xx

Budgies are always "tarts" and are not a loyal bird to their partners, so after the initial "who is this interloper" period he will be fine.

Thanks for the advice Karen, you are right about them being tarts in the big cage when the girls ignore the boys attempts at wooing they feed each other instead. Tiny is doing great, we have a stick game he has kept the stalk from the millet and will sit happily chewing it in the palm of my hand if he drops it I put him on a perch and pick it up call 'There it is' and he hops back on my hand. Bless he will play this for ages. After breaking a string of balls toy I put the bell back in and he loves it. Shame all bugies that will sit on my finger or hand have to come beak first and bite. After two weeks of being soft as Tiny now bites if he drops the stick, I have put him back on the perch and stopped playing if he does this. He is such an attention seeker when my hand stays still and hanging down in the cage he gazes at it and calls. If I talk to the other birds and ignore him he goes nuts for his play time. Bless Billie xx
