Hi all, I need a little help. I came home from work today and found my parakeet, Bella, with a puffy eye that looks pink-ish. Her eyelid is what is swollen. I don't think here eye was puffy this morning. Her mate does pick on her and they fight, do you think that he would have pecked her eye? Does anyone know of common eye diseases for parakeets? Thanks!

I've left my birdies in the care of my sister for NINE days while I am in Florida. I miss them SO much and hope I never have to go away from them again! I feel really guilty about leaving them I go home on Tuesday, though. Yay!

Today I visited a privately owned pet store and discovered a cockatoo tucked away from all the action. She's plucked out most of her feathers and only had tail, wing, and head feathers. I asked the pet shop owner why she thought the cockatoo was plucking herself and the owner said the cockatoo has been upset and needs attention and a loving home. Her name is Hailey and I think the lady said she is 17 years old. Usually I can "forget" about situations like this because they hurt me because I know I can't do anything, but the thing is I can't get Hailey out of my head! I really think I should help this poor girl. She costs $1200 with her cage. Is this high/low? I've not had dealings with bigger birds. Here's why I may not be able to help her. 1. My dad does not like animals (although he has let me have a cockatiel and budgie) 2. Money is BIG in our house. My dad does not get paid much and we are below the poverty level (although working on moving up) so if I said I wanted to spend $1200 on a bird my parents would have a fit. It would be my money, btw, not my parents. But still. They wouldn't like it. 3. There is not much space in my room that I share with my little sister and my two birds I know she really needs me and I don't know what to do. Please, ANY advice/suggestions/encouragement would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think I've introduced my birds yet! I used to have a Tiel and a Keet but I had some recent additions This is Willow. He's about 2 and a half years old. His main nickname is Goey (goo-ee) Here he is proudly playing in his seed container With his Mama He's checking the cracks for monsters Next we have Buttercup Who is also about 2 and a half. His main nickname is Buggy. Buggy and his mama Here he is with his favorite tennis ball. He loves it when we throw it up and down for him! Both of them together And again I rescued a pair of Keets on wednesday when I saw an add in the newspaper that said they were free I think they are 2-3 years old. Their names are Vincent and Bella Vincent Vincent and Bella Bella's nose seems like it's swollen or something. You can see in the pictures that it sticks out funny. Does anyone know why this might be? Maybe she's just made that way? Anyway, there are my babies!

My poor little Vincent is not breathing well. He is a parakeet that is approx. 3-4 years old and I just got him a few months ago. It's 4am and he woke my sister up with his loud labored breathing that sounds like two rough stones being rubbed together. There was some major tail bobbing going on but after about 3 minutes of doing that he "got better" and stopped his rasping sound. I listened close and he was still making the same sound, just more quietly. The vet doesn't open until 8:30am so I can't call them yet. Maybe Vince has something stuck in his crop? I don't know what to do....I need some advice please!

1. My female parakeet, Bella, seems generally unhappy and is attracted to "tents" like when I cover her and Vincent up at night she runs over and tries to get closer to the blanket. Personally I'm thinking she wants a nest...any thoughts? I really don't want her to have eggs because there's the possibility of egg binding plus she'll practically live in the nest box. To top it off, it seems like half or more of the babies always die I don't have ANY experience with babies except for the one time I took care of a friend's for a week. The mama bird was SO skinny and unhealthy looking--I just don't want Bella to be like that. But then again she seems somewhat unhappy... 2.Is there any way to get email updates for threads and such on this forum? 3. What sort of hair care products do you use? I've never used anything except shampoo and conditioner for fear that the scent of hair spray or gel would kill my babies. I was thinking about getting my hair cut in a way that I would have to style it but I don't want to use anything that could harm my birds Any advice is welcome! Thanks~

That could be part of it. I'll have to see about getting a humidifier. What kind do you use?

My budgie has started doing something a little odd over the past few days. He will sneeze about 6 times in a row and then sit there and stretch his neck, looking like he's gagging. There is no discharge when he sneezes and he has been sneezing off and on during the day today. He does not seem to act sick and chirps happily like normal. I did offer him a new food mix last week. (along with his normal seeds) Maybe he was allergic to something in that? Anyone know what might cause this?

Thanks for your replies! The thermo perch can be bought at www.drsfostersmith.comI purchased two lixit bottles for my birds and my parakeet really likes his! I've only seen my cockatiel drink out of his twice, so I gave him his old water dish back along with the lixit bottle. He really doesn't care for the bottle. :-\

I'm going to be replacing my birds' water dishes and buy some bottles because they're more sanitary. (good idea?) I'm looking at Lixit bottles but I'd love to hear some suggestions if anyone has some. Also, I'd like to know if anyone has had experience with the Thermo perch. I'm a little concerned that it would be a fire hazard. Don't want to do anything that might endanger my babies!

I'm on vacation in FL and we were at a beach when my dad spotted a seagull flapping in the water with his head stuck behind him. He called me over, asking me what was wrong with the bird. Poor seagull had a fishing lure stuck in his beak and wing, keeping his head behind him. Since he had been pulling for a while the hook was embedded in the beak and had torn a cut about half an inch long. It looked pretty bad. He must have been like that for a while because he let me pick him up. Thankfully I had read about a seabird rescue beforehand and knew where to take the little guy. He struggled some, but did REALLY good for the 45 minute drive to the sanctuary. We took him right to the birdie "ER" and they had the hook out in about 5 minutes. The lady said he was very skinny so he would have to stay there for 6-8 weeks to get better. I was so happy that we could bring him to a place where he will be well cared for! If you ever need to use the place it's called Suncoast Seabird sanctuary and it's near reddington shores in Florida. And it's a fun place to just go visit www.seabirdsanctuary.orgHere are the only two pictures we got
