Hi Sal
Sorry for the lack of updates, we went a way for a week or so and they were left in the very capable hands of our neighbours.
Harry has been out three times since. He is getting much better about being picked up to come out. He gives a token attempt and disgust about being picked up then just gives up and steps on to my hand. I cover his shoulders while I take him to the other side of the room and he is much better about it now.
Well he made it to the sofa ok, flew at the cage door! and had a run round so its all good really. I don't bring Tiny out anymore though as he gets very upset about being handled then flies like a missile around the room. I'm worried he will prang into something. At least harry only flies 2 foot off the floor and only for short bursts.
They have been very sad though without the girls around. They do their own things seperately. Eat and sleep mainly, when we were away I made sure there was a radio on during the day, so there was gently noise (Classic FM) and there is some talking in the station so they wouldn't feel the house was too quiet. I find if I put the radio on they all perk up and chatter happily, but go to sleep if I turn it off...Radio controlled budgies eh!
Hugs

Hi All Well I think Harry is getting the hang of this flying lark. My theory is to get him to fly across the room twice then I'll put him back in the cage. He was much better about being picked up today, he stepped on to my hand and didn't get too narky about my thumb being over his back so he didn't fly too soon. As soon as I moved my hand a bit he was off, he flew well and skidded on the floor landing. He was keen to step up and finally flew across the room to land on the sofa AT LAST I helped him up to sit on the door for a rest then helped him back into the cage. What a star. He even looked like he might have enjoyed his fly Are you board of these daily updates yet? There will be a gap for a couple of weeks as DH is pinching my computer! Hugs Billie

Well Harry astonded everyone the other day. I brought him out for a fly and he flew around the corner to land in the dining room with DH! Now DH isn't that interested in the birds, but he put his hand out to Harry to see what he would do and Harry stepped up on to hubbies hand it was a first for both of them! Harry didn't stay long and came back into the living room, tried to land on the coffee table and skidded across it to splat off the other side. I put him back in the cage, he was a bit shakie but unhurt...good job he has his own air bag (chunk). Yesterday he managed to swerve! He flew off me and at the wall, but swerved to miss it. Rubbish on the landing STILL! You would think a nice BIG SOFT sofa would be a better bet wouldn't you DOH. Bless him Billie

Hi All In today's adventure, Harry sat with me for a while, getting over the indignity of being picked up to come out for a fly. Then after a rest launched himself at the tv, he landed safely on the table in front of it. After a look round he flew across the room and towards the cage. He'd had such a good fly I offered him a hand and he stepped up beautifully and I put him back in the cage. What a star I'm leaving Tiny and Minty in the cage, Minty would panic if out and isn't used to being handled, he's still quite nervous without Sky around. Tiny would come out if picked up but it would leave Minty in the cage alone, which just now isn't a good idea. Harry's flying is getting much better. Landing with any style and grace needs a lot of work though this does actually look a lot like Harry flying bless. Billie

Minty is always trying to feed the perch seed. He goes to the feeder picks up a single seed then plays with the seed in his mouth and trys to feed it to the perch. We think its coz when there were more birds he used to often get pushed off the feeder. So he thinks he can only get a bite in before getting pushed off the pot. Its taking him a while to adjust to the fact he's ok for longer now.

Awww Bless Borris, I bet she'd go pink if she knew you were showing everyone her bad feather day The good news in the house is that now the flock have stated to settle, Harry's fitness routine has restarted. I got him out yesterday, and he flew from the arm chair towards the cage I worked it out, if I put him on the top of the cage he won't move, if I hold him near the cage he climbs on the cage and still won't fly....BUT he's a homing budgie, put him further away from the cage and he flies towards it I got him out today and he flew to the cage twice. I offered him a step up after his second flight and took him back to the cage good as gold. LOVE him. Billie

Hi KAren I'm so sorry for your loss, that's just awful your poor bird and you too The boys are settling down quite well now. Tiny has taken charge, Minty is coping better. Harry will follow anyone. Not ready to get any more birds. Five was too many and three are noisy enough! Thanks for your kind words though. I was just making sure that Minty's cere changing colour wasn't a need to rush to the vet Hugs Billie xx

Hi Karen At the time Minty's cere changed colour there was nowt wrong with his libido, he was constantly chasing his mate/sister Sky and trying to feed her and chatted her up constantly. I wonder if it will change colour again? Now Sky has died poor Minty is very lost, he isn't calling for her or looking for her, but she was the leader and the boys are not sure what to do. Minty keeps sitting alone and trying to feed the perch. Minty and Sky were inseperable. Any attempts to buddy up from Tiny and Harry are met with Minty either closing his eyes as if hiding or running away. He's gone even more anxious than he used to be. My poor Sky only died on Thursday. Billie

Hi All
My poor Sky died earlier, on the way to the vets, after a fall in the cage.
Minty was her mate and brother (!) but they were inseperable, and I couldn't bear the thought of him searching for her and calling for her. So I put her body back in the bottom of the cage. This is what happened. Minty & Tiny did their chatting up song for her from their perches. They kept looking down at her.
Minty went to the bottom of the cage and ate grit from the dish next to SKy looking over to her from time to time. Tiny came down and did the same. Harry joined them after a while. Tiny and Harry went back up to the high perches and didn't take much notice after that.
Minty went over to Sky and quietly sang to her. He walked around and kept coming back to her. Got cross and no response and shoved the dish around, then came back to her. He flew back up to the high perches and had a preen.
Tiny came for a look, but didn't sing to her.
Once they all had preened and eaten and seemed to settle for a doze I took Sky out of the cage. Harry and Tiny are carrying on as normal. Minty is feeding and going round chatting up drinkers and cage bars. I take it to mean he is looking for a new friend so hoping it means he won't be calling for or looking for Sky.
I've no idea what they are thinking or feeling or how much they 'understand' but doing this seems to have Minty calmer than I would have expected and he hasn't been looking for or calling for Sky.
If you have this happen to you, its personal preference as to what you feel comfortable doing. But for our flock it seems to have been the right thing to do. Rather than being upset as you 'expect' they would be, they just seem to check what has happend then move on.
Its going to take me longer to do the same.
