The past week or two Ember was moulting. Ember will be 5 years old this summer. He wasn't losing a ton of feathers, but there were feathers at the bottom of his cage. I do notice when he is in this stage he seems crabbier, acts differently and doesn't want to come out of his cage as easily. Normally he zooms out of his cage door but I have to take him out on my hand during moulting, becomes a bit nippy. Ember was eating food, drinking, but he looked a bit 'unwell' Now he is back to normal. Does anyone else's budgies act differently/funny during moulting?

For some strange reason Shelley I knew what your question was before opening the post. The simple answer is YES. Mine are all crabbier. Boris got really nippy and my father called her a few choice names. Moulting takes alot out of them. Thank goodness it only happens a couple times a year. Imagine if they moulted every month!

lol! Oh yes he was a crabby little guy, but thank goodness he is back to his usual goofy self. I guess it is like pms of the bird world, lol.
That is good to know this is normal. I thought maybe something was wrong with him.

My budgie Blue looks like shes really ill when she moults then a couple of weeks later she is fine. Bless hormones are a nightmare even for the birds then.
