In used to be quite involved in the bird hobby a few years ago and was given a tip on how to sex tiels when their colour and markings aren't obvious(Like in the case if normal grey tiels versus the whiteface varieties). I was told cock birds are generally louder and are more prone to screaming and hens are quieter. Or have I got that mixed up? I ask this question because I don't know wether my tiel Pie is a boy or girl! I suspect he is a she but for a while I thought she was a he coz when I first got him/her all he/she did was whistle! Pie was about 6/7 weeks when I got him/her in very early January and now nearly five months old would like to know if I have a boy or girl. Pie whistles/vocalises very little and most of the time just perches on my clothes horse... And just for an awwww moment here's a pic of my potty mouth Rainbow Lorikeet Sparky grooming Pie's neck feathers the other night when Pie asked him to(Keep in mind this is the same bird who chases Pie around the cage)

wow you're birds are beautiful! i got a very soft spot for tiels....i have 4 i was told that if your bird taps the perches or the cage bars a bit like a wood pecker, then its a boy. also if it whistles a song for mating and holds its wings away from its body slightly and runs up and down the perch while doing it its definately a boy. have you ever seen your bird hold its tail up slightly, lower its head and make a constant rolling kinda song? if so its a hen as they do this when they want to mate. oh and i never tried this but a hen's pervic bones are wider apart than a males. you could try to feel them and see if he/she will let you? thats all i know about sexing tiels that arent normal greys oh i just thought of something.......if your tiel loses the pearling after its 1st moult then its a boy, my hen has kept her pearling. thats how i knew it wa a hen before she laid an egg!!!

Well it does sound like my Pie is a girl. She doesn't run up and down the perch or tap anything with her beak and as you can see has quite obvious pearl markings so things sound like a girl. But she still does some weird things like flap her wings really really hard then fall off the perch and thrash around a bit thrn get up and whistle loudly a few times almost like something has frightened her then she's fine(I've always said tiels are loopy things hehe)

yeah she sounds like a girl. my hen does alsorts of loopy things, infact your tiel sounds just like my Jessie, she does those kind of things too. she's a complete nutter and sooooo funny. Sometimes she can be really affectionate too, she'll sit on my shoulder and snuggle up and sometimes she will preen my hair.
