I'm getting a cockatiel!!! So unexpected but I'm so happy. I have a budgie (for 2 months) and have finally named him Rascal. What do ya think? Anyway... to my questions about the new cockatiel that is going to be called Murphy (he is a normal gray). I was thinking about a cage with the size of 22.5L x 20D x 30H. What do you all think? The breeder said it was ok but I wanted to see what you all thought. Also I know I don't have to worry about qaurantine since they are not going to be in the same cage, but should they be in different rooms for a while for quarantine? Thanks!!

I like the names, I would possibly say that having them quarinteened in a different cage would be ok, as long as they arent in the same cage. I think they should be fine in the same room, but best ask scully or karen. But they are my thoughts. Good luck with your new bird

Congrats on your tiel Karma, you are going to thoroughly enjoy him! I love the names... Rascal is a great one!! When I quarantined Bertie (my first tiel who died after 6 days) I kept him in a completely different room, because I know that some diseases/viruses etc are airborne and wanted to be able to keep them far apart. Also my kaks would have landed on his cage wanting to have a look which would have made the quarantining pointless surely. Not a hundred percent sure whether this was entirely necessary but I am glad I did as otherwise my kaks could've caught whatever it was he dies from!

Thanks all I'm so excited. Murphy is the sweetest thing. The breeder was going to keep him becuase he was such a cuddly boy and she couldn't part with him, but I mentioned I was thinking about getting one eventually and she said I could have him for free becuase she knows he would go to a good home with me. OF COURSE I couldn't resist once he gave me kisses and let me scratch his head I think I will put them in seperate rooms for a while just to be safe. I feel kind of bad because Rascal is so new (2 months he's been with me) and now a stranger is coming in. So what do you all think of the cage size? That is my biggest worry. I saw ones similar to the size at the store and it seemed pretty decent.

Oh congrats on your new baby. I'd keep him in a separate room just to be on the safe side.

congrats on the new tiel if the mesurements are in cm i would say it`s to small but if you plan to have the tiel out most of the time and just use it as a night cage mite be ok

Congrats, they are wonderful birds..im no tiel expert. What i have found is thier wing span is pretty big, i have a small indoor avairy, and truthfully i wouldnt want much smaller than that. Ive moved out perches, and given my tiel alot more flapping space. Even though when hes sitting on a perch he does look quite small for the cage.
I compleatly forgot about quarintine with the tiel ive just lost, and put him in with my little Budgie Graham. To risk little Graham after all he copes with, was very thoughtless of me. would With the sad experience Orange has just had, it just shows how important it is. My new tiel is on his own, but next to my two other birds. I cannot separate them into different rooms. But when the quarinetine is over you should find your two get along really well.
they really are special little birds

I think the cage size is okay.
When you are quarantining a new bird it should be housed at a minimum distance of 4 metres from other birds & if the other bird (Rascal is a cute name!) is out & about move the cage outside the room.

Scully you do realise that budgies and tiels should NEVER be housed together even temporary, even the most nicest of budgies can do a great deal of damage to a tiel. Ive had almost attacks with my own budgies and tiels to the point I never leave them out together un supervised ever.

I think your cage sounds fine, mine is 32l, 32h, 22d and I have two in there, but mine get about 8/9 hours free flying time a day.

Ok I have decided to go with that cage I said earlier becuase I can't find one I like better. They are all wierdly shaped in the size I need. I'm praying it will be big enough. Here's a picture of Murphy from the breeders website... His head is getting more yellow now. I know he is just a normal gray but I think he's adorable. In the eye of the beholder I guess
