Hello everyone. I have one budgie at the moment as a pet but i am very interested in starting to breed them. I was wondering if some one could tell me the answers to my questions. 1) Can budgies breed indoors? 2) how big should the cage be? 3) How big should the nest box be? 4) what food should be given in addition for added calcium and things like that? 5) can they be kept in the same room as my pet bird? all help appreciated. thankyou.

Be warned that your pet bird may annoy them a bit and/or become jealous - especially when babies come along. Male and Female budgies ideally should be at least 1 year old before breeding - they can and do breed earlier but are too immature physically & mentally.

ok thnaks for that karen. i have read many places that female budgies under 1 year normally become egg bound and die as they cant cope with laying. Also I cant get to stafford so ill have to find another way of getting a breeding pair if I am going to start breeding.

if you are going to "shop buy" try to get one from each shop, this will decrease the possibility of inbreeding as shops usually only use a maximum of 1 or 2 breeders to get their stock from

Sounds like they might both be male. Recessive Pied males cere's will vary between fleshy pink and purplish. Can you get a picture of their cere's for us?

They are lovely! That's a neat pose too. I'm pretty sure they are both male actually. Lindsay I'm more sure on.

Adult females will have a brown cere. I can't confirm 100% with the blue bird as the baby bars are still visible, the shape of it's skull would suggest female but it still has growing to do so sorry I won't make a judgement yet on your blue baby. The budgie in my signature - her name is Boris. Up until her adult moult her cere was a similar colour and I was convinced she was a boy.
