hi
they are zebra finches. the grey one is definitely a male, the other i'm not 100% sure as i dont know if the sex can be told by the same factors in different colour mutations. We had grey and fawn zebra finches and the females didnt have any cheek patches but i dont know how to sex white ones.
do they get on ok or do they seem to scrap a little?

Well I thought that one was a male too. They seem too get along one of them sleeps in one of the food dishes. I said that one might be a girl but can't remember which one. My sister said they were told that they were young.

Hi Lady, I've kept zebs for over 10years and I can tell you that both of those little guys are males. The normal grey does look young, and looks to be moulting into his first adult feathers. The chestnut flanked white is a definate male because of the chestnut feathers. Females never have this, though they may have some slight barring on the chest. Now all you have to do is get a couple of females and you'll soon have hundreds of them!

I don't think I will tell him about the breeding though. He would love it but his Mum wouldn't.. No need to be sorry matthaismouse thats what we are here for to find out as much as we can about our little friends.. Thanks everyone for all your help.. I will pass it on..

Finches really aren't into toys the same ways as our little budgies and parrots are....I don't think they're little brains get it very much. However, they do LOVE bathing so a fresh bath of water every few days and they'll go crazy. They also love nesting....so even without females if you want something to keep them amused give them a little nest basket and some hay and they'll have a great time. You'll probably find that the males actually act like a pair and build the nest together I love zebs, they're SOO cute! I started with two males and in less than two years ended up with about 30...all started with "Just one egg mum, please" and here I am 11 years later and still crazy about birds! haha! I don't think my folks ever realised it would go this far!
