Sorry for the post overload about Berts!! But I have another one! My mum didn't think to ask how old Bertie is when she went and bought him for me, so I have been scanning the net to try and find a way of somehow finding out his age. The only thing I have come across is that they have their first moult at around 6 months of age and then get some kind of barring across their tails. I have had a good look at Berties tail and see no bars at all on it, so I am assuming that he must be under 6 months. Does anyone know if this method works and also does it matter that he is a lutino? Do lutinos get this barring as well as the normal greys?? Sorry guys, I will be catching Karen up soon with all my posts!!!

Lutinos don't get the barring! Sorry! I'm not even sure if lutinos have a black beak when young. Basically, like most birds, you can't tell their age! he looks adult to me. Having said that, tiels are probably the easiest birds to tame. And, once tame, it is like having a baby! They love to snuggle, love head scratches, and will hang out with you heaps! Mine are soooooo excited when they see my car - they start screaming to me #cheesy# As soon as I get in and let them out of the cage they fly to me for head scratches. They hang out on the keyboard - hence my sometimes unique spelling #cheesy# (can you tell I love tiels???)

Lutinos dont get the bars and the bars appear before the first moult and in a males case they disappear, female tiels keep the tails bars in most mutations, even my pied Barnslee has faint barring on her tail.
Im sorry Bertie died - its tough losing one. It pretty much sounds to me like they had an outbreak of something at the store so it wouldnt matter how old he was, he would have gotten sick anyways. I doubt there is much you can do I had a similar experience with a budgie and I had vets reports done etc and they wouldnt even give a refund. My advice would be go NEVER visit that store again to even purchase accessories and deffo go to an experienced breeder who can give you what you want.

Thanks A11y. Don't worry hard to keep up here somtimes : )
Thanks Booms, I won't be going to the store again. I have just got myself two new hand reared baby tiels from a breeder... they are beautiful and have so much confidence compared to Bertie, he was a nervous wreck bless him!
