as he has had a swollen eye for the past 2 weeks which I have been treating. It wasn't getting any better so took him today. He is blind in his right eye - he has glaucoma. I could attempt to treat it with glaucoma medication but there is no pupil reaction at all or I could have the eye removed. He isn't suffering & the vet said he'll live a normal life - except for being blindsided by other birds. I was watching him, he seems happy so I don't want to put him through the stress of an operation so I'll put him back with his girlfriend and we'll see how he goes.

Sounds like you made the right decision Karen. Why was the suggestion made to amputate the eye? Is that just so it looks better or is there a medical reason?

It was just for aesthetic reasons. I don't see the point in putting him through all that, especially when the little devil can still run as fast as a cheetah & bites as hard as a crocodile! (except the little darling behaved himself in front of the vet - made a liar out of me!)

I thought it might have been, and I totally agree with your decision. Who cares what they look like? We love them anyhow!

Karen ... it's sad that your birdie is blind in one eye but I think that you've made the right decision ... I always think it's dangerous operating on anything small... I'm sure he'll be fine .....

I'm sure he will be fine too, I guess we all survive our little handicaps so he will too. He has actually sort of gotten used to little cuddles from me and only squirms half the time now instead of all the time. He even sits still when I scratch him at the side of his beak and neck. I'm going to give him a whole bunch of his favourite seed and spoil him rotten for being such a good boy at the vets!

Karen im just catching up with this one.
I expect Your bird will do fine with one eye, and it was good he had the other removed. Glaucoma is painful.

I haven't had the eye removed, I don't want to put him through surgery. My father has glaucoma, his eyesight won't improve with treatment but won't get worse. It is too late for the boy, he is already blind.
I was just reading a post on the Kakariki forum & a fellow there has a hen who has been blind in one eye since her mother scratched her eye in the nest. He said she has led a great life & has raised some babies. He said he just has to let her know he is in the cage if he's on her blind side.

Normaly it's poor nutrition or lack ability to absorb nutrition.
If you feed good diet and free from chemicals...Some times it can turn around.

His is a perfectly healthy bird with plenty of healthy vegies, fruit & seed. The vet said it looked like what he called a 'stabbing' injury causing glaucoma. Or some such. Basically the injury caused the buildup behind the eye like glaucoma & the eye 'blew'.

awww bless him, i agree with you not to have surgery just for the "prettyness" rating. im sure he wil do fine, animals cope better with disabilities than people #rolleyes#
Oooo quick!! give him them treats and keep up with the cuddles - you'll make a tame bird of him yet! lol

:)sorry i thought someone said you did..
Having one blind eye is nothing to worry about. He will see almost normally, sometimes you will notice if he does not catch things on the blind side, but he will be fine Karen.
He certainly wont worry about it either.

He died today. I picked him up this morning & cuddled him & he let mum & my sister scratch him. I put him back in his cage and he was paralyzed & arching his back in what looked like extreme pain!! I think he had a stroke, I was going to take him to the vet to be put down but it was unnecessary, he died around noon.
