As you know this is my first breeding of kakariki & I have a question.
Do the babies tend to look like they have forward leg splay in the nest? I took baby 1 out & put splints on his legs as it looked shocking & when I put him back baby 2' legs were in the same position as baby 1! Do they just commonly sit like that? Baby 1 can fold his legs.

They do sit and lie in some strange positions, sometimes in such a way it makes you feel concerened. Look back at my baby pics, and you will see what i mean. All turned out fine as you know. They act like thier legs cannot carry the weight of thier bodies

oh that is a relief! I panicked when Baby 1's legs were straight out in front & when I saw Baby 2 in exactly the same way I nearly had a heart attack!

Hey Karen I agree with Scully they do sit in some very odd positions! I was constantly worried about mine because, as you say, they seem to sit with their legs stuck out in front a lot. This is I'm sure down to that fact that there is just so much of them at that age, that they really don't know where to put everything - they actually remind me of new born foals in that respect. They will still be quite wobbly when they do start trying to stand up, but don't worry. Peggy was my only one with a problem and that was undoubtedly due to the fact that the other six squashed her. You shouldn't have that problem with just the two of them. Just keep an eye on their elbow joints as any swelling here would be the first sign of a problem. The other thing that you can look out for is the tendon alignment (which was Peggys problem), as you can clearly see this running over the back of the elbow joint at that age. Any sign of that being in the wrong place, then get those splints out again. Other than that just enjoy their gangly stage - they are so adorable at this stage & get so independant so quickly when that's over They really are lovely Karen - you must be so chuft after having waited for so long

I am chuffed to the sky! My mum cuddled Baby 1 and she is in love She said he was nuzzling her finger & gripping another in his feet. Donna, I just looked at your babies growing up and I am relaxed about their sitting position now, at least I know it's normal.

No that's it. 2 from 2 is a pretty good success rate.

I'm hoping so but it is starting to warm up & I don't want them to breed through summer as I reckon it'd be too hot and might kill the mumma. The other female has been spending alot of time in the other nesting box the past few days. I don't know who if any of the 2 boys she is breeding with as 1 of them seems totally uninterested in the opposite sex & the other is busy raising his chicks & feeding the missus.
