Great, that sounds easy enough. Another big question that everyone is asking me is whether I'll eventually get him a friend. I know that all parrots are social birds, but is there a high risk of him fighting with / killing a newbie? I just want him to have the best possible life.

not really. The only thing you could find with buying him a friend is you might find he will become protective over the new guy. Which is possibly a good thing, but you dont want to lose the bond with your guy. If you do buy a new bird, to start with put them in a separate cage each till they get used to eachother and if you really want to put them together try them after a couple of weeks and see how they go. Your best bet would be to buy the second bird handreared as well then you wont or shouldnt have any probs.

I plan on spending about an hour a day directly playing with him, and at other times I'll provide him with lots of toys and have music/TV on. Do you think he would be happier with a lorikeet friend?

5 days to go
Another couple of things that suddenly popped into my head are:
- if he doesn't bathe himself, how often do I do it and should the water be room-temperature? - is it important to know gender? The current owners might just be assuming that Yogie is a boy. I know with cockatiels the females suffer from egg-binding - do gender-related problems occur in lorikeets?
This forum is such a fantastic resource! Thanks everyone!

Well I haven't met a lorikeet yet who won't bathe themselves, the biggest problem being, they love to use their drinking water, often when it's full of food lol. You should have no trouble with the bathing side of things.
I don't know of any gender specific problems with lorikeets.

you probably wont have any problems with them bathing, as jules said, they love there drinking water, probably because it is not cold and is room temperature. As for gender sides of things, unless you are planning to breed from him then I wouldnt worry about finding out the sex. I bought harriette at six weeks old as a boy, and lol last year she started laying eggs. I am getting her a mate, just to keep her company while Im at work, and if they breed well Im lucky. Boys tend to have a flatter head on top and are rather larger in the head then females. You can probably tell this about 1 year old when they are fully grown.
If yogi doesnt bath, (which Im sure he will) try putting him in the shower with you, and make the water lukewarm. You can buy shower perches from the petshop especially for birds. These are great. Although I dont need one for harriette she loves her baths.
Im sure you will do an excellent job with yogi, and you must be getting so excited to get him. As we said dont be afraid to ask questions, thats what were here for, and thats to help. Specially new bird owners, it is a daunting thing, in buying new fids as you dont know what to expect with alot of things. You learn as you go along, hey I know Im still learning with all my guys.

There's a huuuge toy area in the pet store we went to - they specialise in birds. Are all toys specifically designed for birds safe? I just wonder, because I'm a bit apprehensive about rope toys (though I did end up buying him one). There were macaws at the pet shop too! They were so beautiful Turns out they cost AUD$13,000! I can understand why though; they're so amazing. At the pet shop, the large birds aren't caged and are free to roam around. Mind you, their wings are clipped so they don't get very far.
