8-)hi guys, i,m new but furious and need advice. my neihbour recently aquired a yellow parakeet, gorgeous bird looks like an enormous canary!! she had said bird roughly two and half weeks, all i heard was her shouting at the bird to f*****g shut up. when i asked how she was going with it she told me i could buy it off her for hundred pounds or she was going to let it go. bought the bird in a budgie cage wich was obviously way to small, went out next day and spent nearly three hundred on a parrot cage toys food ect.. the bird was so scared evry time i went near its cage it screamed, it never bit me but made a major fuss flapping its wings and making noise. after acouple of days i could gently put my hands in cage to feed ect so long as i was slow and diddent alarm her. its just that i,v now noticed it looks like someone has tried clipping her wings, i,v had hold of her and so long as she has a cover over her head she will let me look at the wounds, and they are awfull!! whoever has done it has made a real mess it must be so sore and painfull, they are both bad but the left more than the right bleeding if she knocks them and also when she preens. i have her in a specialist vets on wednesday but just woundering if there is anything i should do in the meantime? i live in a city and parakeets are classed as exotic pets so vets are few and far between. she does seem more settled in the three days i,v had her but to see her in pain is hard what should i do? gratefull for any advice jo

Hi Jo and welcome. This is all too common a thing that we hear, birds having there wings clipped by the in-experienced. Not a lot can be done once the wings have been clipped like that other than time to heal. Having the parrot in a large cage is a plus, being in a small cage it will only damage its quill ends even more, so the large cage is much better. Yes its a good idea to get the parrot to a vet ASAP to assess the bleeding quills, as theses quill stubs may have to be extracted. Once the bleeding quills have been removed the healing process will be much quicker and the parrot will not be in as much stress when it bumps its wings, also it will not be as sore when its preening. Your very right, this poor little parrot will be hurting. Until the vet visit try and keep its stress level down, maybe cover a side of the cage so it has a place to retreat to if needed, and also a nice spot in your home thats warmish, free from cold drafts (not sure of your temp there) and have its so the parrot can see you but will not be startled as people pass. No matter how scared they can be, they still love to see whats going on around them. Have you found out what sort of parrot it is yet, maybe a photo if you can manage will help...and good for you for taking in a friend Cheers Deb if you need more help, just ask

hi again, still not sure what it is, my neihbour swears its a parakeet, must admit it is the same size shape ect.. its bigger than a cockateil bright yellow with a red beak, but not as big as an african grey parrot, maybe in between that and a cockateil. will put a pic up in a few weeks when she,s more settled. dont want the flash to scare her she,s been through enough. i will let you know after she has seen the vet on wed. either way i,v tottally fallen in love with her and hopefully between me and the vet we can get her sorted, and give her the life she deserves.

does your parrot look like this one? if she does then its an Indian Ringneck, the males have a ring around their necks, females dont. i hope she recovers from her awful experience. you are doing a great job so far. Good luck for wednesday. i hope the vet can help her out.

i'm sure they are classed as a large parakeet. i would get her a male friend as when my female had hers, they looked lovely together and preened each other, made cute little noises and it calmed her down a lot. Maybe ask the vet about when to get a mate as i'm not sure if she would like that if she is feeling sore, if you know what i mean Her mate Minty died last month and now she has got loud again! i'm looking for a mate for her too. i have pictures of them in the asiatic parrot section on here.

yes sorry, she,s called manic. sounds odd i know but the reason is the holiday park i take my kids to every year has a parrot puppet called manic, so my ten year old son named her. will keep all informed of our vet trip on wed and you are right, these birds are addictive i,v had her since wed and am already planning my next.... lol

its so sad and upsetting toread when people do things like this to animals, they woudlnt try amputating a human part so why animals they have feelings too, i'm so glad you have found her and are taken obviously good care of her, i'm sure she will grow and flourish and make a wonderful friend
