Went in the Grass Parrot aviary this morning & checked the boxes and found a Bourke Baby! Went in there this afternoon for another look for the missing red rump baby & checked the Bourke nest box again and found a newly hatched baby! Exciting discovering 2 bubs in 1 day! Don't move will you mum? The newest bub kind of looks a bit 'wet' and is on the left side of the pile of fluff.

In all she laid 3 eggs. She is a beautiful bird. They are so calm, rarely do they bite and all this girl does is growl at me when I inspect the box.

Do most birds bite when you mess with them while the're on their eggs?

I never 'mess' with birds when they are on eggs or have young. It is called a nest inspection & it must be done to remove any dead eggs or chicks which can cause disease and/or further deaths in the nest not just to the other chicks but also to the parents.

Ohh... Have you ever seen a dead egg or is it not that common?

Dead eggs are pretty common. Some hens will lay too many and can't incubate them all or for 1 reason or another they just do not develop. I had to throw out a Red Rump egg on the weekend that was dead.

Growing quite nicely now. Here they are with mum who wasn't happy with me looking today: Eldest Bub: Youngest Bub:

the bubs were attacked by a non breeding Red Rump hen who wanted the box. I had to put down the youngest as the injuries were too severe to save her. The eldest survived until the 8th day when he died peacefully in his sleep.
