Seed you could leave for 2 days if you give a good amount. Water needs to be changed daily with the bowl scrubbed. Fresh vegetables need to be supplied daily and the tray lining should be changed every 2-3 days and the cage scrubbed weekly. This would only take 5 minutes so not long for a busy person.

I don't mean to put a dampner on things but if you're so busy at the moment maybe you shouldn't get a parakeet until you have more time for it. Are you away overnight with your hockey?

To tell the truth you might be better waiting until you don't have so much on your plate to get a bird. Birds - especially pet ones - require alot of time and attention. To keep them tame you need to spend a good hour with them daily. Rats, guinea pigs, mice etc are good pets if you don't have alot of time to spend with them.

Do you have family who would actually help with the taming process? Who would take the bird out and play with it if you were not home to do it? Would they clean the cage and feed it? It would need to be a family affair if you are not there all the time. If they would share in all the above you could make it work.

As others have already said, you really need to decide and I feel you do not have the time & inclination for keeping a bird at the present time. Birds (especially if kept as a sinlg bird) need company, they are flock creatures! I feel it is cruel to keep a bird in the manner you have mentioned as they should ber given as much time & effort as they need to lead a happy life! Stick with your tournaments for now..............

Mue's words are especially relevant as your mom has told you that you will have to leave the bird when you go on vacation also, I think maybe the time isn't right for you to have a bird

We're not trying to be mean or anything. We're trying to save you the heartache of 6 months down the track saying you have to get rid of the bird because it screams, bites etc which is what will happen I'm afraid. I've seen it happen many times and it's not a pleasant thing to have to give up your companion.

I'm having a little think here... (this doesn't happen often, feel privaledged! Lol!).... I guess by parakeet you mean budgie right? I think americans call what we call budgies parakeets. Is there any chance you could get two so when you're not there, they'd keep each other company?? Also, about the bowls, maybe you could get seven bowls and give them a fresh one everyday of the week and then clean all of them at the same time when they've all been used? Obviously, you wouldn't be able to change them over when you're away though. Also, some birds can learn to use small pet water bottles (my pigeons are forever "borrowing" my rabbits bottle!) but it's important to still clean the bottle fairly regularly as algae grows in them. I hope thats helpful in some way!!

One thing that I find sad is how many parents are putting their childrens birds on craigs list because the kids have lost interest in them.
I have picked up two sets that were in my area and the birds and I are going through re taming. It is a lot of work but birds are worth it if you have the time.
I have 6 birds that I rescued and I can't get them to drink from the water bottles. I keep one in their cages trying to get them to use them. But as of yet they will only drink from the bowels. My African Grey and Peach Front Conure both drink only from the bottles but take baths in bowels. I like the bottles because they don't put their food in them or poop in them.
