as previously mentioned in my other post, i am a new budgie owner, and still learning alot about budgies, especially my new budgie Astro Boy i was having a discussion with my Mum the other day, and i was explaining that in the future when Astro grows older, i would like to breed him, and continue breeding to start my own Budgie business while i am at school. But mum said that it is best not to get another budgie to be Astro's mate, as i will lose the friendship with him. She also said that he might stop talking. Im not quite convinced by this and i was wondering if i could get a few more oppinions. What is the best thing i should do? i feel that if i get a mate for Astro in the future our relationship won't change. i would really love to get a mate for him. Kind Regards Kira

That is hard to answer as not all birds' personalities are the same. I've never cared about trying to get my birds to talk - either they do or they don't. I have heard that breeding them does not change their ability to talk, you just keep talking to them and they'll keep talking to you.
On the tameness level is another matter. Boris is the female in my signature (name - long story) and she has had 3 clutches of chicks and is still my tamest bird - a little nippier but still tamest. Before Boris was an inside pet her father was the inside pet. We let him breed and lost all but a little tameness. He still will sometimes come to the wire to bite our finger but he won't sit on our shoulder or finger anymore. 2 different budgies and 2 different outcomes.
Personally, I'd keep Astro as your house pet and try taming him. If he becomes really tame, then buy 2 new budgies to use as breeders. If he doesn't become really tame, buy him a female and when they breed take one of the chicks as a pet soon after it fledges.
