#rolleyes# Hi my name is Roger, I have a red rump male I did have a female mate for him but she died a few days ago and my male is missing her, he keeps calling for her and displaying its very sad to watch, they were 7 years old when the female died. will anyone out there advise me on what to do, would it be OK to get him another female? I don't know if he will accept another female as he has had the last one for so long, I have been told that they mate for life and i worry if i get him a new mate he might reject her. Will anyone out there advise me please many thanks Roger

Hi Roger - welcome to the board I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your female. I'm sure someone will be along soon better than I to answer your questions. It's not nice to watch birds grieving for a mate.

Hi Roger! Welcome to Birdcrazy!
I've never kept red rumps but I've kept other kinds of parakeets and I've had the same problem many a time. I should think your bird would be grateful for a new mate, just introduce them slowly. They'd probably be fine if you put them in together straight away to be honest, all the grass parakeet types are very social and they don't fight much. But to be on the safe side, it's probably wise to get a new hen and put her in a cage nearby for a few days and see how they react to each other. Even if he's not interested in pairing up with her, he'll still enjoy the company.
I'm sure someone who actually keeps red rumps will be along shortly to offer you some better advice! ;D

Hi Roger welcome to the board. So sorry for your loss. I really can't advise you but I think it is good advise to introduce a mate or even just a companion slowly to any birds. good luck It's so sad when they lose their bonded mate.

Hi Roger, I keep and breed red rumps. He will accept a new mate but you mustn't put her in straight away as he'll most likely attack - and possibly kill - her. Red Rumps are the more aggressive of the grass parrots. At the start of this breeding season one of my pairs attacked a & female princess parrot - if I wasn't there they would have killed her for sure. Whenever I've introduced birds to a new mate I put them in adjoining cages so they can see and if they want to, touch the other through the bars. Now, I have had the odd occasion where it was "love at first sight" but not often. If you keep them in your home a good thing to pique his curiosity would be to put her in another room but within earshot so they will call out to each other, then put them next to each other. Hope this has helped. oh and welcome to Bird Crazy.

There's a few members from Hampshire here, George for one - she knows of a good shop that will get in pretty much what you ask for. Scully and battybirdie are from the area too. I'm sure someone will be able to help ;D

Riverside Avairies!! WHEY!! How much do we all love that place?? - www.riversideaviaries.co.uk/ And there's Garson's Garden Centre just up the road, out the back they have Copnor Tropicals Pet Supplies - www.copnor-tropicals.co.uk/ I'd definately give both of them a go. Failing that, I will do my research and get back to you!!

Oh, and as for the shop that can get anything, I'm guessing Kiwi means my favourite pet shop, which is over here on the Isle of Wight - www.petswithhart.com/ They can order in pretty much anything. I'm more than happy to ask them if you want??? Or I think there's a contact section on the website. Also, the pet shop that I just bought a bunch of birds from has a pair of BEAUTIFUL redrumps for £90. I've not seen anything like them before, they're all rainbow coloured. They're only selling them as a pair though I just found this story on the pets with hart site and had to add it on here... see they really can order anything!!.... "This has got to be the best one yet! I am a very laid back boss, as long as things are going smooth and the work gets done then we are one big happy family. Now the girls will tell you that they never see me lose my temper, it just takes a lot....but the peacock day was different! We have a policy if we get somebody in asking about an animal, something that we have to order especially that we need payment upfront, they need to know what they are taking on etc. This day (I was having a day off) a young girl came in enquiring about peacocks, Michelle told her we could get them, but she had to be sure she wanted them and she had to have somewhere ready to put them and she also needed to pay upfront and bring her mum in too so that we knew it was all going to be ok. Sounds very professional? Michelle was spot on. So thats how it was left! Or so we thought. Thursday, 1: Georgies day off, 2: Animal Delivery day. The van pulls up outside the shop, the delivery driver comes in and says "someone will have to give me a hand with this one", we looked at each other puzzled, and Michelle went out to see what it was. The biggest crate you have ever seen! about 2 meters in lenth and about 1.5 meters high. Michelle now realises what this is and thinks "Oh my god, she is gonna go mad". So all of a sudden we have 1 male and 1 female fully grown peacocks in the shop! And nobody knows why? The people who wanted them, we can't get in touch on the phone, and when I did finally get in touch with the young girl all she did was laugh! Im starting to panic now, I know very little about peacocks, and how was I going to house them? I also thought we had been stitched up. I was now very very angry! I promtly phoned George to ask how this had happened....she had just ordered them! Poor Michelle was considering calling her mum to see if we could use one of her stables as a shelter until we could figure out what to do with them. Georgie turns up at the shop with tail between legs to sort her mess out...by then I had calmed down, so she was no longer going to get the sack Luckly for everyone, the girls mum phoned up, and the dad was going to meet us at their house so that we could bed the peacocks down for the night....Lucky Georgie! I think a lesson has been learn't!"

If this is what your male looks like in colour then you have a normal red rump

There are different colour varietys for most birds but they're essentially all the same thing! Some colour variety's are more expensive than others. I'll have to see if I can find out what the ones I saw were. They looked quite odd for red rumps!! Quick google search later.... I think they were "opaline red rumps". Very pretty, had a lot of red on them. Slightly less quick google search later........... like this!! -
