Hello everyone, I am having a problem with my budgies, recently about once a month they suddenly start to panic in the middle of the night, they screech and flap about for 5 to 10 minutes and nothing seems to calm them down. Ive been told and read that animals can sense 'ghosts' and things and i believe my house to be haunted, could this be the cause or could someone shed some more truthful light on the subject and give me some tips to help prevent it as I am worried they may harm themselves if this continues.
Thanks in advance from Matt.
Also merry Christmas everyone.

I have heard that a lot of birds get "night fright" and flap crazily in their cages. My tiels did it just the other night around 3 AM. I had to get up and switch the light on to calm them down. If it is bcoming a regular problem, maybe you could have a very low lit lamp on away from their cage so it throws a very dim light. That way they may be able to see enough to calm down as they can cause themselves damage in the cage. Or try covering them at night if you don't do this already. It could be anything that scares them from falling off a perch, a mouse or large insect crawling around, and I believe that birds, (along with all animals) dream and maybe they have a nightmare or something. I have also read that animals see ghosts and my cat used to regularly hiss and arch up at apparently "nothing" and always in the same part of the house. So you never know. Good luck with it all and hop something I have mentioned helps.

My bird do that too Matt, especially my Tiel, and with his big wings flapping around its worrying. I have to go and calm him down. I'm not sure always the reason why.

My Tiel does this, which upsets my other birds so they start flapping too. I really don't know why, but I think it might be because the house creaks or I shift around in my sleep. Like Tasha said, maybe a bad dream! A friend of mine has 7 parakeets in one cage and told me that they all flap like that sometime during the night when it is a full moon.

thanks for the replies, Ill start to cover them over as i think i found the problem, last night i woke up and the nieghbours put their kitchen light on which is near my window, the curtain that was left open really looked like a person and as its quite near their cage maybe thats the problem.
ill let you all know how its shapes out and hopefully it will be sorted soon, the last time it happened lights being on in my room fully didn't calm them down and its getting longer before they do calm down.
again thanks for the replies
