My beloved Birdie has had a swollen foot - on the foot part below ankle above toe joints. It shows up pink and the brown scales are gone. Birdie favours it a bit at times but eats well and plays. I live in very isolated part of Eastern Cape South Africa and there is no avian vet within a days trip away. Its hot and I would hate to stress birdie with a long trip like this. The state vet who says she hates birds tried to help with an antibiotic given for 5 days but it did not help. Please help.

unfortunately i would recommend the day's trip to the avian vet if antibiotics havent helped then it obviously isnt an infection and could mean that there is something more serious, maybe a muscle or bone complaint. Did your vet (that hates birds) have a look at the foot or did she prescribe something over the phone? We have had a bird before that had a fibre wrapped around the foot and needed a toe amputated once the fibre was removed. Could s/he maybe have something wrapped round it? I would put him/her in a smaller confined cage to restrict movement and doing potentially more damage untill he/she is able to see the avian vet. Sorry i know this isnt what you was hoping to hear, but i dont really think there is anything more i can suggest?

if your not near a vet, how far is the chemist or drug store?
Witch Hazel might take the swelling down, soak some on a tissue, and hold on the swelling for a while.

There is nothing wrapped around Birdie's foot. The nearest chemist is two towns away and this is South Africa, as much as I love this place travelling on our roads and in the summer heat with taxis and holiday traffic is something else and you take your life in your hands when you venture onto the road at this time of the year (remember we have highest road accident rate in the world). I can't understand Birdie - she is perky and full of life most of the time. Her cage is in our living room and the only odd thing besides the swollen foot is she is not keen to come out - she usually loves to be out of the cage. The only avian vet I know lives in East London and is on holiday at present. Most vets in the East Cape country districts work with cattle and sheep and do the odd pet spay when necessary. Our nearest is two towns away and is also on holiday. (I have been phoning). Everything in our area seems to close down at this time of the year - factories, doctors, vets etc. Even I'm on holiday at present. Birdie is eating well and is getting too much attention what with headrubs and petting but just won't come out of her cage.

i must admit, i sometimes take advantage of the ease of access to my avian vet and local amenities - its not till im reminded of the remoteness of some of our members that i realise how lucky i am! We have called on our vet so often over the years that she is even godmother to one of my children #norty# awww bless her! she sounds like she's getting SO much fuss and attention i agree with Donna though, witch hazel is a godsend! ive had a quick search and found "HEALx SOOTHER PLUS CREAM" www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/products/page/healx.html (bottom product) i have a good look around the site and there doesnt seem to be any restrcitions on areas to post to (as far as i could see). Hope it helps?

Oh dear I tried the website for photos and did not even get that right. I emailed someone (hope someone does not mind) I need education in forums and all kinds of things. Birdies condition remains the same. Tomorrow friends are going to a city so I should soon have witch hazel. My poor bird - I wish I could just make it all better at once

All you folk are fabulous - the support and encouragement received are wonderful and heartwarming. I'm bird mad so its nice to discuss problems and pleasures with other likeminded people! I found a bird clinic at the other side of our country and phoned. They said I could email details which I did and have the following reply: "Dr De Beer had a look at the e-mail and the photos and came to the conclusion that Birdie has dermatitis which has affected the pigmentation layer of the skin. It can be treated with a product called citro-natural ointment that we manufacture. It must applied to the foot twice daily and the foot must then be lightly rubbed. Unfortunately it can take very long to heal, since it is a fungal infection." I'm trying to order the stuff but nothing is happening fast. What do you all think?

i think Dr De Beer is a very helpful Dr to be willing to look at photos and give you a diagnosis is fab! Even though it could take a while to heal, at least you know it will be healed eventually with the right medication. Not knowing either way doubles the worry! Bird mad = in the right place!!! #norty# everyone is as nutty as fruitcakes here, except me of course
