Hi all,
Mikko is so excited to meet everyone. So I thought I better introduce the 'gang'.
He, along with our other adoptees live in a lovely aviary that my husband, Chuck, built. The aviary is in a window enclosed room overlooking our backyard & lake. They have the best of two worlds. A wonderful view & are safe from predators.
Now for their introduction:
From the top (clockwise), is Pij'ette. She was brought to me in June of 2003 with an old wound to her wing in which a horrific abscess had formed (see insert). It appeared she had been shot. With the assistance of a local rehabber, we were able to treat the abscess. Unfortunately, due to the wound being old, she lost the use of her wing. She's doing wonderfully as an aviary bird.
Next, is Mikko, who was my first adoptee. He was brought to me in Nov. 2002 after being found wandering the streets with no place to go. He is an Old Dutch Capuchine, which is a breed of show pigeon. He was banded a 2000 bird, so we're celebrating his 7th birthday this year.
In the lower basket is Sam (Samantha) & in front of her is Sadie. They are the offspring of Mikko & Pij'ette. They were born the 5th & 7th of Nov. 2003.
Finally we have Malio. He is our most recent adoptee. He was also found wandering the streets & as you can see, could be Mikko's twin. He was taken to a rescue center where I adopted him in Oct. 2005.
Rae Charles is our adorable blind pigeon. She's a common feral who was brought to me Oct. of 2004 after being found in a yard, unable to pick up seeds that a gentleman was tossing to a few of his feathered friends. She was very easy to catch, so the fellow thought she might have been sick.
Upon examination, she didn't appear to be sick, rather blind.
She now lives in a nice little 'apartment' within the aviary.
I worried that she would have problems finding her food & water so I placed a low perch in from of her seed, grit & water. She quickly learned that every time she stepped on her perch, her food was right at hand. She's a very special bird.
Pictured with her is Pij, who was her 'bestest' buddy. He would entertain her for hours.
Sadly, Pij passed away February 11th, 2006 (I will post a link to his story & tribute in the 'Crossing over the Rainbow Bridge' section.
