Hello, I am new to the forum. I am an avid animal lover and have recently purchased my first cockatiel! I have never owned a bird of any sorts so im learning lots! Last week i visited our local pet store where i was introduced to a two week old (maybe a little older judging by pictures ive looked up )hand fed tiel. I fell in love. Went home, read about them went back the same day and bought him/her.
lol i dont know what came over me. the more i am learning the more anxious im getting!!! Ill be visiting the pet store weekly where the lady will be teaching me how to train and handle the bird. I know to have the set up ready and to give him some space the first few days to adjust.
I understand they eat a variety of foods, which do you find they enjoy the most? I know i will be getting the same feed as the store so im not switching brands, but as for fruits veg ect. id like to know whats favourable or most nutritious. Also what kinds of toys would be ideal to purchase, i want to get quite a few to switch them, giving him a "new toy" if i have to leave for the day or something. Any general advice would be great. Im hoping to teach him or her lots of tricks and hopefully songs and words. Like i said ANY advice im loving learning all about them! Thanks! Jess

Hi Jess, welcome aboard!!!
Congratulations on your new baby! Tiels are so much fun! We have lots of tiel owners on here that can give you plenty of advice, I found thast mine prefer Apple more than any other fresh food, but they also like broccoli, carrot, radishes, bananas, plums off my plum tree in the summer and a wide variety of berries (depending on whats in season).
Has the shop given you any idea when you'll be able to take him/her home? Im so excited for you!!

Hi & welcome Jess.
Wow, your first tiel, very exciting. They really are such lovely birds. I have an old Lutino man and 2 youngish girls. The old fella, Sindel, isn't big on eating good healthy fruit or veg unless it is in the mouth, then he wants it!! The girls on the other hand will try different foods in their bowl. They really love sprouted seeds, apple, corn, peas, carrot, (slightly cooked), broccoli, and the odd grapes.
I am sure the time will fly by, (no pun inteneded lol) and you will have your little baby home with you in no time.
Can't wait for the piccies. ;D
