I have a smaller cage that would be suitable for one finch or one canary. My question is if they can be housed alone without a friend. I have budgies already and for them it is either way. But I thought I heard that finches like to have a friend. Thank you in advance:)

I wouldn't keep a finch alone... they are just too attached to their pals. Finches aren't (usually) tame like a budgie, and they need somebody to hang out with. In my opinion, even a budgie shouldn't be alone unless they are really bonded to you and spend time with you. Good for you for thinking ahead... How big is this cage?

I'm with Liz on this one, finches are colony creatures and would really fret if alone. A canary on the other hand is okay by itself. I had a male for a few months and it was great listening to him trying to learn his song.

They do, only problem will be trying to pick one. There are many varieties of canaries and they all have a different song. I'm lucky that when I got mine the lady was only breeding the one variety.

The way my two young finches lean on each other and just plain seem to be utterly in love, I would never keep one alone. My parakeet, however, seems quite happy in his cage by himself. I take him out often, and he stays with me every evening. My mother also has 3 parakeets which are totally wild. I put my Buddy in there with them for an hour or so, so he has company of his own kind.
