This is actually not for my canary, but for one of my friends (and yes really it is for my friend, I don't keep females because I keep males).
She is a yellow american singer, around 1 or 2 years of age. In the past months she has lost all the feathers around her vent, but only her vent, and the area has become enlarged and red. She has been to the vet, but they don't know what is wrong with her and I am curious if anyone else has had this experience?
They have seen no sign of feather plucking, she is isolated in her own cage (in case it is contagious) however otherwise she is fine; very active, still chirps and interacts, eating and passing stool perfectly fine.
I want to take her myself, however I am afraid that it is something contagious in which case I do not have a room seperate from my other three canaries to keep her in (or if I can get her healthy, keeper her until I can find a better home).
If you have an idea of what it may be I am perfectly willing to research it, any information would be appreciated.

Enlarged vent can mean enlarged heart, kidney or liver issues can also cause an enlarged vent making it look like it's in breeding condition. Is your friend 100% positive it is a hen? Reason I ask is while researching this problem I've come across information that suggests it is the male that gets a red and swollen vent area. See here: canarytales.blogspot.com/2009/03/is-your-cock-ready-for-pairing.htmlI also found this site to be remarkably informative and I have to say I have learnt much from this site: www.robirda.com/flock133.htmlPlease keep us informed on what happens with the little bird. oh and Welcome to Bird Crazy!

I wondered if it was related to breeding. I was going to suggest it might be that she was ready to breed too.
Hope you find your answers and the little bird is ok
Best wishes
