Ok, I've been having troubles with Lucy (ekkie) lately. She has been getting off her cage more and more now that she's fully flighted. Normally that wouldn't be a bad thing as she's only able to do that when we're home and can watch her. The problem is that when she gets down on the floor, she chases/lunges at me. I'm the only one she does this to. Now, she can be on her cage and I can all but climb in it and she has no problem with it. Like I said it's only when she is on the floor. Well, that really isn't true -- she charged at me while on the kitchen cabinet last night -- right in front of the hubby even. First time that's happened. So, any guesses as to what is happening and what I can do about it? I've tried locking her in the cage until hubby gets home but that just doesn't seem fair to her. So, I've started letting her out and keeping a towel close by so that when she does start this attacking I can pick her up without getting bit and put her back on her cage. I don't mind her on the floor just the charging and attacking. I'm thinking dominance thing, but

is she like this when your hubby is or isnt in the room? if the answer's "is" then i would guess a dominance/jealousy thing going on. If its just a random action then maybe hormonal?? all us girls suffer from PMT at some point, surely a bird is no different hehe!!
I havent seen photos of her for AGES gonna go search the boards to see the pretty Lucy ;D

Unfortunately it is a female ecky thing Deb. Females once they hit sexual maturity tend to turn aggressive. Not every female will - some small percentage stay their loving selves. There isn't anything that you can really do I'm afraid. On an Australian forum there are a few ecky breeders. One of the staff has a handraised ecky female who was loving until maturity and now tries to rip her to shreds. The handraised male is still his lovable self but the female gets nasty now. I don't think she gets nasty at her husband though - just her. Maybe you could try clipping her wings, although I don't know if that will help. Great to see you Debra!

Haha! Lucy is a perfect angel around the hubby. In Lucy's eyes I'm the "other woman". I figure it is a female ekkie thing, but sheesh, why doesn't she get cage aggressive also? Oh, and she does have her sweet side like today when she came up to me and wanted me to pick her up. I did and she just cuddled with me. She only chases me when she's on the ground. It's the strangest thing. Silly little girl.

Funny she chases you on the ground, to a bird its the lowest perch If Biggles gets grumpy, he gets put on the floor, then he struts around head bobbing. Once he stops, he will get picked up again.
Shame we cant get into thier tiny feathery heads! ;D
