Okay so hi! *waves* I've just joined, i am so glad i found this place!
Basically, its my Kakariki, Kiika. He had an eye infection in his left eye two weeks ago, and had chewed off his left toe. So i took him to the vets. He said that Kiika had an eye infection, with stys similar to that which us humans get. He said his toe would heal within a few days. He got fitted with a collar and he got eye drops to take, which cleared it up nicely over the past two weeks. I took the collar off him on the weekend, his eye is more-or-less healed now anyway.
Through Sunday he was okay but i got up this morning and saw that his OTHER eye is a swollen up like a bloody golfball.
I put his collar back on, and worked out that it couldn't have been an infection passed over from the left eye, (the one which was infected first.) Even with the collar on, he could still wipe his eye/face on the bars of his cage and on the corner of his food dish. If the infection would have spread, it would have done it this way!
The only thing that collar did was stop him from wiping his eye on his perch. And as soon as i take the collar off, his right eye gets infected. Okay, so some people might say that there was a bug on his feet or something causing him to contaminate the perch ect, But he climbs the bars of the cage that he wipes his eyes on anyway. Couldn't have been that. Plus my mam washed the perches in a VERY VERY diluted solution of BABY disinfectant.
I have a feeling it might be the wood in which he perch is made out of. He might be allergic to it or smething.
Anyway, i have another bird, Muska, and he's a 'Tiel. I've checked his eyes and they are fine, i don't want the infection spreading to him even though he is on the other side of the room to Kiika.
I was wondering if anyone knows what this is. Ill hopefully be taking Kiika to the vets this afternoon but i wanted to know if eye problems are common in Kakarikis. Also, if anyone has had any experience with this type of bird and infection, any advice/help would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks again!
