In all my years of breeding budgies this is the first one that has become egg-bound a new experience for me.
I noticed her this evening when I went to feed and put them to bed and she was very lethargic and I put it down to her sitting on eggs which were due to hatch any day.
She was out of the nest sitting near the water container with a big bulge.
I have treated her with a warm bath and administered warm oil in her rear and she is sitting on a perch and hopefully the egg will pass in the next few hours.
She will be taken to the vets in the morning so it is going to be a long night but she is worth it.
I am going to have her sterilized as I discovered that one of the eggs that she laid was larger than the others and on opening it I discovered it was a double yolked egg, so I'm presuming the egg that is bound is also very large hence the need for sterilization and she will become an indoor bird and live out the rest of her life as one spoilt bird.
I have taken pics of the egg with the two yolks and will post them as soon as I can. (still learning how to download and post them. My daughter usually does it for me but I'm learning)
After staying up half the night making sure that Pumpkin was kept hydrated and to see if she would pass the egg but she didn't it was a trip to the vet.
After two calcium injections to start the process of laying the egg failed Chris applied lubricant and with gentle pressure the egg was passed intact and on examining the egg I told Chris it was larger than a normal egg hence the problem.
She is now in the hospital cage and full of beans and you would never guess that she had a problem in the first place.
I have the best vet who doesn't charge an arm and a leg for treatment and is always available and only ten mins away.
So now I have mother and son as house budgies. Clompy her son was the youngest of her last clutch she had eight and raised them all but he got squashed and has a deformed foot otherwise he is fine and free flys in the house 24/7 and dive bombs us as well very cheeky little devil .
wow... been an adventval couple of days... Avril if you hadnt helped your little budgie she would most probably have died very slowly and painfully.. its great to think theres someone out there who cares about there birds as much as i do... peaceful infact lol.. anyways congrats
