Recently I was out with my chooks and a falcon came past. I grabbed my camera and took a photo of it, I recently lost my bird book (AUS And TAS) and I'm wondering if anyone knows what type of bird this is: From what I saw it was quite a small hunter, when it opened its wings it was a light brown with small dark brown spotty type things on it. It had a nice straight tail. Thanks!

That is quite a striking bird! The red collar is unusual, I've never seen something like that. It looks like it might be a perigrine falcon, but the beak doesn't seem like it is right. I don't know where you live, so it makes it harder to narrow down the species. Here is a link with pictures of a peregrine- www.australiazoo.com.au/conservation/programs/endangered-species/peregrine-falcon.phpHow much lighter was its underside? And is the beak as short as it looks in that picture?

I live in Tasmania, up in the country of penguin. It defiantly wasn't a perigrine... It looked like it was an adult aswell. I've never seen one before.

I googled Australian Raptors and searched through every one I could find. I actually found the picture by accident! I was searching for well over an hour to find it. Just got my teeth into it and could let it go!

The bird is indeed a collared sparrow hawk more commonly known as a chicken hawk they are found virtually Australia wide. if you have baby chickens keep an eye on them if that guy is about.
