Oh why - do breeders clip their birds wings, and not tell the customer they have sold the bird to that they are clipped??! Tilly's wings are so clipped she can ger barely 3 foot in the air before crash landing - I found this out the hard way when I let her out for the first time last night, poor little baby

Oh, poor baby. The breeder I'm getting my new tiel from is clipping her wings, but she doesn't do a severe clip thank goodness. Plus the breeder asked if I wanted her wings trimmed. Wish I could help you with that. Poor Tilly.

I guess they probably do that so when they are being weaned (and birds can fly at this stage) they don't go trying crazy acrobats and hurting themselves. Most people (myself included) for taming birds do a first clip & by the time the wings grow out again the bird is head over heels in love with you and knows the territory so accidents are less likely to happen. this is a good topic Deb, I think you should move it to the general board - get some breeders opinions on this. The people here won't take offense. I'll leave the decision up to you though cos it is your thread.

I see your frustrations Debbie!! I myself, wait until my babies have learned to stretch their wings before I clip, many do clip entirely too closely, I dont know if its inexperience? or the fact they just have their methods.. my babies seem more well adjusted when I wait..generally by the time I clip, weaning is days away..I sometimes have babies flying all over my kitchen LOL! they remind me of moths flapping at a light & just before I clip they know where they wanna go & they get to their destination easily..it really depends on the bird..thankfully they will grow out..I know what why your mad tho >:(they hit so hard when they fall...

Wing clipping is a subject we have always kept away from, and its a subject that will always crop up. People should be able to speak freely on our boards, as long as its kept under control. I used to be dead against it, but im not now. I still think its horrible to take away what birds are on the earth for, and they have no choice when we come along with the clippers. I've done it myself, but none of my birds are clipped at the moment.
but....i almost clipped Biggles last week, and i mean a full clip which i dont do, but hes going through this nippy stage and im wondering if it will calm him down. Hes going through the maturing stage, and is so full of himself. He so bloody tiny, i keep saying to myself, how can i? How can i cut his feathers off, when hes my little love bug, so i can't bring myself to do it at the moment.

none of my breeders are clipped, but my reasons for doing it, is to make them more dependant upon you & therefore *mind better* if I hadnt clipped my parrotlets wings I wouldnt have ever had him on me, he preferred to be on my ceiling fan making a game out of (catch me if you can) lol ...if they learn to come to me on command then I allow the wngs to grow out! my yellow naped amazons wings were allowed by me to grow back in, simply because she came to me when I called or gave her teh hand signals..they are like kids though, some mind & some dont, I dont agree with clipping so far down as to harm the bird..that to me is cruel.

I used to be against clipping till I met Mue - she clipped Meg's wings beautifully, it made the bond between us a heck of alot stronger. I'm not against it anymore but if I'd have been warned Tilly was clipped I'd have handled her first fly time differently. Poor baby is scared stiff of me now

That was the same with me Kiwi, when i lost that lovely tiel , and Mue asked if i wanted Biggs clipped, i said yes. Biggs could still fly everywhere, but if he did escape he would not get too far hopefully. I hated looking at them , even when i knew he could fly indoors where he wanted. It was far from cruel, indoors it made no difference to him. I did clip the same when they started to grow out once, but now hes fully feathered.
I gave Lennie(Kak) a clip in the avairy, almost a full one. He was bullying Sugar, and i thought it may slow him down, and give her a chance to escape from him. It did'nt do that much really, but slowed him down a little.
Kaeci had the same clip as Biggs, early summer, just incase he escaped too. My kitchen door is close to the cages. Hes grown out now.
I made a promise i would'nt clip Ziggy for any reason except her health, and i will keep to that. Bigger birds i feel need to fly, as it does not take much effort to get to one side of a room to the other, and they need that exercise.
I hate it really, and hate doing it, but sometimes its just the right thing to do.

I am either way on clipping. I used to have birds that were kept clipped, now I let them have full flight. Having said that, I am very seriously thinking of clipping the girls (tiels) wings as they have found a new game. It's called "lets fly up to the tippy top of the ceiling and ignore Tash when she asks us to come back, then wait for her to get a chair and she just about can reach us then fly to another part of the room and repeat the proccess all over again" Yes great game girls !!!!

Juniper can fly either way, so I never clip his wings. Razz can't really fly all that great, so when I tried to let them grow out he crashed into everything. See Razz is still getting used to me, so I want his wings clipped. I try to take him down from my shoulder and stuff when he gets fiesty, but without the wings clipped, he can just fly back up.

Well i clipped Biggs this weekend but to tell you the truth, we have not had cuddles like we have had now, for ages. He was being so grumpy, and it was horrible to do, he kept squeaking and thats what i hate to hear. Right afterwards, he acted like a baby, and snuggled under my chin. What i feel its done, is he lost a bit of confidence, and taken way that cocky attitude, which then he gets nippy. Hes flying, but he knows he cant fly like he was. for weeks ive been telling myself not to , and leave him alone. but hes back to being a total love bug, and im so glad, as i was really thinking we could be loosing our bond. Hes been with me all afternoon, and its been lovely
