Help! I have been unable to determine the sex of my dove pair. I have had them since birth- and they are 5 months old. Each one has displayed male behavior. They have been in the hormonal pre-egg stage for the last week or so, and I figured I'd see who laid the egg- if either of them was female. Yesterday, while my back was turned an egg was laid- on top of the cage- and of course, it rolled down, fell and broke. The 'layer 'didn't know what to make of it all, having this thing come out of her. I was sure it wasn't fertile, because I hadn't seen the two mate and thought they might be too young to know how. Until shortly after, they started billing, then the 'layer' mounted the other one, did the dance, and they both laughed signaling success. Can a female mount and mate a male? ( Please note: this pair is brother and sister- I do not want them to have children- I have a home for the female as soon as I know which one it is.) Having a genetic sexing test is not feasible at this time.
