Can budgies and tiels be housed together in the same cage or do I have the same situation as the budgie and lovebird, needing 2 cages to have 2 different kinds of birds? I am thinking of new birds already. It was a lot of fun to have 2. But Willie would like a budgie and I would like a tiel. This time we are going to a breeder rather than a regular pet store, yes more money, but a better experience. birds that are hand fed/raised are a lot more friendlier and you can actually play with them instead of forcing them out of the cage to get some outside time or to even clean the cage. I know and understand that cats are a danger to birds and they are a natural predator, but if you watch the cat and the bird they can be in the same room. I had to lock up poor Austin so Peka and Harley could be out of the cage. I hated doing that it is not fair to Austin and my birds should not have to be afraid of the cat. Well, that is it for now i will keep viewing the forum until I get some new feathered buddies, bye until then Karen and Willie

A handraised budgie and tiel should be fine in the same cage - as long as it's a large cage and they can have by themselves time. They can be good friends and various forums are filled with examples of tiels and budgies getting along. As to the cat - definately not. It would take 2 seconds for a cat to if not kill, seriously damage a bird oftentimes to the point where the bird will go into shock and die. No one can react quicker than a cat. Of course there are exceptions to this, but not many. It is better to lock the cat out - at least the cat can get some outside play time. Cat + Bird = cat's dinner.

I have raised tiels and budgies and I have also worked in a pet store and from my experience it is actually less expensive to get your bird from a breeder than a pet store. The stores have to order the birds, which are usually wild with no information about their background, while a breeder will be able to give you lineage on the bird, can be more precise about male/female and the birds have been handled and usually hand fed, so may be tamer. As far as putting them in the same cage, the only problem that I have had with the two different breeds is that the budgies tend to pick on the tiels. I had one budgie that was in love with my tiel and pestered the tiel 24/7. The tiel's cage needs to large enough for it to fly around without bumping it's wings everytime it tries to move from perch to perch. Make sure you introduce them slowly before putting them together full time. Let them meet outside the cages for a few days just to see how they react with each other.

I agree with you there. Always go to a breeder first, and if your really desperate go to the petshop. I bought my galah and lorikeet from a petshop and payed way too much for them
