My cockatiel Sunny started plucking his feathers when I started going back to work... It was definitely a separation thing with him... I gave him a mate to keep him company during the day, then we expanded and got a whole heap of other cockatiels which seemed to calm him down a bit... He has stopped plucking his feathers now but he caused so much damage with some that he will never have feathers there again... I would suggest spending time with your new tiel before and after school and trying to bond with it as much as possible. I agree with Shell in that you shouldn't pull your hand away when your cockatiel goes to bite you, the only way that you will make it see that you are boss is by showing it that you are not scared of it... I hope that this helps you out... Cockatiels are wonderful companions and a well trained cockatiel will be your best friend and give you many hours of entertainment and companionship...

I bought Daisy for my little boy Pepper and he had no interest in her what so ever... Daisy is now in a pair with Sunny after Sunny's mate Sandy died a couple of months ago but Pepper is still not interested in her.
I think if it was just the two of them in the cage together he would've come around but because there are so many other distractions in the cage he just wasn't interested.

I have always shown the deceased bird to its mate just before we go to bury it… I feel that it shows them that they are gone… From my experience they have stopped calling once they have seen them… It is very heartbreaking to watch tho, it always brings tears to my eyes, they just sort of look at them… My partner thinks I am mad for doing it but I just really think it is good to let them say goodbye...

How are you going with this Blaine? Have you found a bird that you would like yet?

Yea my cockatiel had a feather plucking problem too... The vet said that it may have been hormones and he gave him an injection to calm his hormones... It seemed to work a little bit but he still picks his feathers from time to time...
The vet also said that it could be because I was always with him and now I work full time so the vet was thinking it could be a seperation thing... He had a mate at that time tho so I am not quite sure if that was the problem either...
He has most of his feathers back now, he is just missing the ones under his wings and around his vent...
